This Friday, Jan. 12, starting at 6:30 p.m. hear musician Simon Paradis at the Mad Park Bistro in Madeira Park.

Roger Camp is organizing another of his twice-a-year great musical fundraisers. The Peanut Butter Jam Winter Food Bank Fundraiser is on Saturday, Jan. 13 at 8:30 p.m. at the Roberts Creek Legion. Come out and enjoy some great music, classic rock and originals, from Slightly Twisted and guests. A $10 donation at the door goes to the food bank. 

Paradis Solo 

This Friday, Jan. 12, starting at 6:30 p.m. hear musician Simon Paradis at the Mad Park Bistro, just off the highway at 12808 Madeira Park Rd., Pender Harbour. Reservations recommended at 604-883-2223. 

Foster Folk Blues 

On Saturday, Jan. 13 at 8 p.m. Jim Foster solos at the Gibsons Legion. Members pay $5; guests $10. Singer/songwriter/guitarist Foster brings his years of experience to funky folk-blues. 

Métis Dances 

The United Canadian Métis Nation invites you to come and learn how to jig and have fun while learning. This event is open to the public to join in on the Saturday dances in Métis style at Davis Bay Hall. This Saturday, Jan. 13 the dance starts at 3 p.m.  

This Weekend 

• The Town of Gibsons’ banners will be auctioned off at a silent auction. Viewing will be Friday to  Sunday, Jan. 12 to 14, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day at Gibsons Public Art Gallery, 431 Marine Drive. 

• The Business of Art starts on Sunday, Jan. 14 at 10 a.m. at the Arts Centre in Sechelt with a talk about how best to use social media to promote your art. Register at www.sunshinecoastartscouncil.com. 

Learn Latin 

Sandra Cardero writes that Latin Cardio workout is resuming at the Sechelt Seniors Activity Centre on Fridays at 10 a.m. in the auditorium. Join others for a fun but effective workout to upbeat Latin music and learn the basics of bachata, merengue, salsa, samba, cha-cha and more.

Creek Time 

Creative in the Creek opens its special brand of art and humour on Thursday, Jan. 18 at the Gumboot Café, Roberts Creek, hosted by Siobhan Brown and David Roche. Doors open at 7 p.m., showtime is 7:30 p.m. Admission is by donation. It’s a supportive and fun space for new and veteran performers (your neighbours) to share their creativity. This month happily features Johanna Marion showcasing her talents including rap and comedy. Junco Jan recites her latest poem titled F**k You, Lung Cancer and F**k You, Death. Denise Olson sings a few of her choice originals. Also featuring David Roche with his edgy yet warm funniness, Lisa Voth performing her one-woman piece, The Bone God, and a rumoured appearance by special guest God. 

Nose Knows 

Mind of the Snail presents their newest shadow puppet performance The Nose Knows, a show for all the family at 11 a.m. or 4 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 19 at Roberts Creek Hall. Celebrate Family Literacy Week by journeying with Mind of a Snail to unseen microscopic worlds inside the body. The Nose Knows is a hilarious, imaginative and musical shadow puppet show for all ages. The event is free (cash donations welcome) but you must pre-register (at www.share-there.com). The event is brought to you by the Sunshine Coast Literacy Coalition (sunshinecoastliteracy.org). 

Burying Ground 

On Saturday, Jan. 20 come out for a night of early country blues/ragtime/jazz with The Burying Ground at Roberts Creek Legion starting at 8 p.m. The Burying Ground has been charming audiences large and small, lending new life to old songs while performing original tunes. Known for their songwriting, they aim to shed light on aspects of the human experience that resonate into the modern day, touching on mental health, the traumas of war, social justice and good old fashioned lost and found love. The band moves effortlessly between toe-tapping dance music, the yearning of country blues and the embellishments and energy of ragtime and jazz. Woody and Devora will be touring with Bonnie Northgraves on trumpet and Wynston Minckler on upright bass. Costs $8 for Legion members; $15 for guests. 

Nell and Jim 

Heritage Playhouse Pro-ductions presents the Nell and Jim Band on Sunday, Jan. 21 at 2 p.m. at the Heritage Playhouse, Gibsons. Nell and Jim bring all of your favourite elements of authentic music together, creating a genre-busting sound that combines country, jazz, folk and bluegrass music. A new album, Baby Let’s Take the Long Way, was released in April 2017 on Whippoorwill Arts and features a blend of original material and classic country gems. Visit heritageplayhouse.com for more.
