Music Makers holds its 20th anniversary celebration this Saturday, Sept. 6 in Whitaker Park in Davis Bay.

Music starts at 1 p.m. and plays until they’re done. Berni G and Frenz, the Hoolicans, Ashley Hautala, Reg and Lynne and the Other Guys, Owen Pallot, Michelle Bruce and Gord Beynon are on hand to entertain. The choirs will be doing random acts of singing in the park. Take part in a Cookie Munch instead of a cake cutting, and there will be kids’ games and a slide show. Bring a blanket or chair and picnic food to share with others.

Elemental to Gambier

The Gibson’s Landing Writers invite you to a reading from Elemental-An Anthology, a lively collection of stories, poems and witty essays. They will be journeying to Gambier Island, former residence for three of the group, this Saturday, Sept. 6 and will be reading at 1:30 p.m. in the Community Hall.

Steve Sell, Sheila Weaver, Jan DeGrass and Gayle Neilson would love to see you there. Admission is free and all are invited to stop by the hall or board the passenger ferry, the Stormaway, from Langdale and enjoy an afternoon with refreshments.   

Forest double bill

This Saturday, Sept. 6 Elphinstone Logging Focus (ELF) presents a double bill event at Roberts Creek Hall.

It includes a film, Northern Grease (a road trip that visits many big energy projects in northern B.C.) that starts at 7:30 p.m. It’s followed by the live music of Carmanah, West Coast roots from Victoria at 9:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 at the door or in advance at MELOmania.

Film Society

The Sunshine Coast Film Society starts its new season in Gibsons on Monday, Sept. 8 with a multi award-winning Indian film, The Lunchbox.

It features a Bollywood star, Irrfan Kahn, and is a romantic story with strong performances and direction. The film screens in Gibsons at 7:30 p.m. at the Heritage Playhouse and runs again in Sechelt on Sunday, Sept. 14 at 2 p.m. at the Seniors Centre. SCFS annual memberships for $20 will be on sale at the theatre, but admission is also available for non-members at a slightly higher fee.

Song Circle

Song Circle begins again for the season on Wednesday, Sept. 10.

Participants will enjoy the talents of three song leaders for each session in the month of September and many different types of songs will be taught including African favourites. New members are welcome. The group meets every week in the hall of the little white (Living Faith Lutheran) church situated on Highway 101 in Davis Bay (corner of Whitaker Rd) from 7 to 9 p.m. These drop-in singing sessions have a suggested minimum donation of $5 that will help the group to support other worthwhile projects. GPAG Event

On Thursday, Sept. 11 at 2 p.m. the Gibsons Public Art Gallery offers a presentation to go along with the Our Forest show: The Artist’s Muses-Materials and Methods: a panel discussion. The textile artists’ group Out of Bounds, who crafted the fabulous wall hangings depicting a forest at the door of the exhibition, reveal their roots of inspiration.

Wet Bum

Producer Lauren Grant, formerly of the Sunshine Coast, is happy to announce that her latest film, Wet Bum, about a teenager who finds an elderly friend in a care home, will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). (See Coast Reporter, July 4). It screens this Sunday, Sept 7 at Toronto’s Isabel Bader Theatre and Wednesday, Sept. 10 at Bloor Hot Docs Theatre. Already tickets are selling fast.  

Edmonds show

As a member of the Pastel Artists of Canada local artist Janice Edmonds has been included in the 33 members chosen for a show at the Flato Markham Theatre Art Gallery in Markham, Ont. Her painting titled Tranquil Spot was also chosen to be included in the poster for the show. The member’s show runs until Sept. 29. See more at www.pastelartists.ca. 

Paint Out

The annual Gibsons Landing Paint Out is part of the 2014 International Plein Air Worldwide event, organized locally by Jan Poynter. The event is Sept. 12 to 14. You’ll see painters working on site in and around Lower Gibsons, finished paintings on display at the Arts Building and the Landing Gallery, and artist demos and presentations, a sketch crawl event for newbies and a participants’ informal gathering and barbecue. Participation is free, but you must register and see a schedule of events at www.janpoynter.com.

Byrnes

Jim Byrnes performs in concert with special guest Lindsay Mitchell at Rockwood Pavilion in Sechelt next Saturday, Sept. 13.

His latest album St. Louis Times is one of the most personal to date. Byrnes takes the audience on an intimate musical journey just in time for the 250th anniversary of the founding of the city of St. Louis and the 100th anniversary of the song St. Louis Blues. Doors open at 7; show at 8 p.m. Tickets for $25, available at Strait Music, Sechelt, MELOmania, Roberts Creek, Gaia’s Gifts, Gibsons and Laedeli, Sunnycrest Mall.
