Music Makers Choir begins

Music Makers Adult Choir starts a new session on Feb. 4.

Lynne Dickson is giving a free workshop this Sunday, Jan. 25 for people who would like to sing in a choir, but have never had the experience or would like a refresher. This is a stress free afternoon of learning the ins and outs of choir life, voice production, part singing and more. Poynter courses

Artist Jan Poynter will be giving two courses this season. Basic Acrylic is on two Saturdays, Jan. 24 and 31 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This is for beginners (age 16-plus) and artists wanting to reboot their painting practice or try out acrylics. This includes a 2 to 4 p.m. extra studio time at Zocalo in Gibsons.

She will also be teaching Works in Progress, four sessions prepaid or drop-in (if space is available) on Fridays, Jan. 23 and 30 and Feb. 6 and 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Works in Progress is not for beginners.

Musical group

Ensemble Vivant performs at the Pender Harbour School of Music in Madeira Park, this Sunday, Jan. 25 at 2 p.m. This chamber music group has received great reviews in its 30-plus years together. Led by gifted pianist Catherine Wilson, the group sweeps through musical genres including Piazzolla tangos, masterworks by Leroy Anderson and original compositions. Tickets are $25 for concerts in the Pender Harbour Music Society series. They are available at Harbour Insurance, John Henry’s Marina, the Visitor Info Centre in Sechelt and Gaia’s Fair Trade in Gibsons.

Cultural evening

On Thursday, Jan. 29 at 5 p.m. doors open for a Coast Salish cultural evening with a 5:30 p.m. potluck dinner, 6 p.m. Coast Salish drumming, singing and dancing until 7:45 p.m. The location is the shíshálh Longhouse, 5548 Monkey Tree Lane, Sechelt, and it is hosted by the shíshálh Nation.

Fee is $10 per person and $25 per family of four.

All proceeds for this fundraiser event will go to Aboriginal Week in June and for a memorial and celebration for the survivors of Residential School in the week of June 2015.

Driftwood AGM

All are invited to Driftwood Players annual general meeting on Thursday, Jan. 29 at 7 p.m. at the Heritage Playhouse in Gibsons. Along with the business meeting, Driftwood usually prepares a fun event including skits and performance from the Theatre School and Story Theatre. Also featured is a preview from a forthcoming production, The Grandkid.
