Mimosa: a perfect afternoon cocktail

Channelling the innovative spirits of the likes of jazz legends Cleo Laine, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Serge Gainsbourg, the Vancouver quintet Mimosa delivers on all levels.

Channelling the innovative spirits of the likes of jazz legends Cleo Laine, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Serge Gainsbourg, the Vancouver quintet Mimosa delivers on all levels.

Their liquid sound, quirky lyrics and stunning improv bring together a sweep of world music from pulsing Brazilian sambas, smoky ‘60s French chanson to intimate cabaret torch songs.

Heard often at festivals across Canada and on the CBC, the Mimosa “sound” is unique and directly tied to the personal and musical backgrounds of its members.

In their bio materials, Mimosa calls Anna Lumiere, “the main driver behind the wheel of the band.” She plays left-hand bass, right-hand keyboard as well as writing most of the music for the band with lyrics in French, Spanish and English.

Karen Graves, virtuoso saxophone and flute player loves to improvise as does vocalist Rebecca Shoichet who developed her craft through musical theatre and performance with many noted Vancouver bands. Bernie Arai brings broad experience as a performer, recording artist and educator to stylings of music from jazz to electronic music to Japanese taiko drumming. Adam Thomas is one of Vancouver’s most in demand bass players and, more recently, vocalists.

Together, Mimosa is the perfect cocktail for a Sunday afternoon.

The Pender Harbour Music Society presents Mimosa Sunday, Nov. 2 at 2 p.m. at the School of Music.

Tickets are $25, available from Harbour Insurance, John Henry’s Marina, the Sechelt Visitors Centre and Gaia’s Fair Trade.
