Metamorphosis at the Arts Centre

Art Beat

Metamorphosis means a major change in the appearance or character of someone or something.

Interpreting the concept of metamorphosis was the challenge sent out to Sunshine Coast Artists for the next exhibit at the Arts Centre in Sechelt. Thirty-eight submissions have been selected from more than 100 entries.

On display will be a range of work including: drawing, painting, photography, digital media, mixed media, etchings, metal sculpture, mixed media sculpture and collage. The exhibit runs from Aug. 6 to 31 with an opening reception on Saturday, Aug. 9, from 4 to 6 p.m.

The exhibit was scheduled to coincide with the jam packed art week of Aug. 13 to 17 featuring the Hackett Park Arts and Crafts Fair, the Festival of the Written Arts, The Rainforest Circus and the Power of Paint, to name but a few of the 12 different arts events happening that week. For more information call 604-885-5412 or check out the website at www.scartscouncil.com.

Gallery hours are Wednesday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m.

On Aug. 9 and 10 he will play two house concerts, but the 9th is already sold out. This time around, he is also going to lead a workshop for writers — all writers, not just songwriters — and those interested in writing. Why I Write is offered on Aug. 9 from noon to 2 p.m. in Halfmoon Bay for $22.

Participants can contact John Lussier at 604-740-9944 or jlussier@sd46.bc.ca for more information or to reserve.

Ballet

Kathleen Holmes has been holding a few intense ballet sessions on the Coast for those who like to sweat a bit during summer.

The next ballet class is taking place on Aug. 11 to 15. If you can’t make the whole week, drop-ins are available. Email her at kdhhholmes@gmail.com or phone 604-740-9951.

Concert aftermath

Shendra Hanney who organized the recent visit by virtuoso pianist and composer Peter Arnstein writes that his concert on July 20 had an interesting aftermath. A 13-year-old student who is hooked on composition enjoyed an inspirational hour with the pianist and was invited to a private house concert where he experienced the full impact of Arnstein’s talent. Hanney believes that this kind of contact is life-changing for students and important for future musicianship.
