Logie painting at auction

Art Beat

St. Bart’s Food Bank is holding a fundraising barbecue and silent auction this Sunday, Aug. 17, and they have a very lovely painting by the late renowned artist Patricia Richardson Logie to be made available by silent auction.

This will be of interest to those who collect Logie’s work. The oil painting is a framed still life, 19x23, and there will be a reserve bid.

Tickets are still available for the barbecue that starts at 5 p.m., but if people are interested in this painting, they do not have to attend the barbecue. They can instead come for the bidding that remains open from 8 to 8:30 p.m. at St. Bartholomew’s Anglican Church in Gibsons.

For information call 604-886-7410.

Power of Paint

After 17 years of creative collaboration, the Eleven Equal Artists are hosting their third annual exhibition, the Power of Paint, this weekend.

This captivating event showcases the paintings of Morley Baker, Josefa Fritz Barham, Todd Clark, Elizabeth Evans, Greta Grunow Guzek, Carol LaFave, Kim LaFave, Ian MacLeod, Cindy Riach, Nadina Tandy and Marleen Vermeulen.

It’s a glimpse into their artistic world with an opening reception this Friday from 5 to 9 p.m. This event also enables the artists to raise money through the sale of T-shirts and art panels for the Eleven Equal Artists visual arts bursary fund, supporting young Coast artists’ education. The show is open Saturday, Aug. 16, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Seaside Centre in Sechelt. Admission is free.

Glass demo

The current Balance exhibition of glass artists and Todd Clark at the Gibsons Public Art Gallery runs to Monday, Aug. 18. This Saturday, Aug. 16, at 2 p.m. the gallery will host a stained glass demo by artist Susan Furze. For information contact Michael Aze at 604-886-0531 or email [email protected].

More music

Music in the Landing during the August long weekend was fabulous — like a mini music festival with talented and dynamic musicians. Can they outdo that this coming weekend?

The free music program starts off at the Gibsons Farmers Market this Friday from 1 to 3 p.m. with Bonar Harris on guitar and vocals.

At 7 p.m. jazz duo favourite Anagram (Anna Lumiere on piano, and Graham Ord, sax, flute and percussion) performs in the gazebo on the wharf.

Saturday morning starts with Brett Wildeman, guitar/vocals, and John Tipping on drums at 11 a.m. in Pioneer Square, followed at noon by Back Porch Reunion with Dale Stavroff, vocals/guitar, Katie Angermeyer, violin, and Al Burns on drums.

Saturday at 7 p.m., bring your lawn chairs and picnic blankets to Winegarden Waterfront Park and enjoy original tunes with a twist from Janet Panic, guitar/vocals. The second set at 8 p.m. will bring solid blues harmonica, guitar and vocals by Steve Hinton and Dave Patterson.

Sunday on the Sun Dial Stage enjoy another double bill as the Fireside Philosophers, Laurel Lefay and Larry Smith, perform at 11 a.m. At noon Berni G and Frenz, Boyd Norman and Barry Taylor, will liven up your afternoon with entertaining vocals and stride piano style. Check out pictures of all the shows at facebook.com/music.landing.

AMP

Sunshine Coast band Astral Motion Project (aka AMP) will be rocking the Roberts Creek Legion this Saturday, Aug. 16. The band will be bringing its energetic mix of funk, reggae, Latin rock and awesome Beatles covers. Dan Richter invites you to come on down and bust a move. Music is at 9:45 p.m. and cover is $5 for Legion members, $10 for non-members.

Chamber music

The Pender Harbour Chamber Music Festival takes place this weekend Aug. 15 to 17.

Artistic director Alexander Tselyakov wants to alert audiences to the importance of the closing piece in Saturday’s 2 p.m. concert. The version of Ernest Chausson’s Poême, Op.25, which will be performed as a piano sextet, is in fact a North American première of this particular version — newly arranged and performed by the festival’s artist and excellent violinist Gary Levinson together with artists the Lafayette String Quartet and pianist Baya Kakouberi.

The festival is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. Tickets are available at http://penderharbourmusic.ca/chamber-music/ and by calling 604-989-3995.

Male singers

If you can sing, dance or tell a joke and are aged 50-plus, consider auditioning for a fundraising musical variety show to take place at the Seniors Centre in Sechelt this fall. Men are needed for the show, says musical director Miss Berni G. Auditions are on Tuesday, Aug. 19, from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. but you must phone first and make an appointment with Berni at 604-886-6827.
