The Sunshine Coast Jazz Society presents Steve Normandin, direct from Quebec, this Saturday, Sept. 6 at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre in Sechelt at 8 p.m.

The Sunshine Coast Jazz Society who brings you the Gibsons Landing Jazz Festival is excited to present Steve Normandin, direct from Quebec, this Saturday, Sept. 6 at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre in Sechelt at 8 p.m.

Opening for Normandin will be the jazz duo ‘Anagram’ with Anna Lumiere, grand piano and Graham Ord, sax, flute and percussion.

A self-taught musician, Normandin plays piano, accordion (squeeze box and piano accordion) and harmonica. A composer and lyricist, he’s also a terrific singer who can (and will, chez nous) perform Canadian folk or French songs with real panache. He regularly salvages those would-be vinyl relics from the dust bin of history and revivifies them for both his own pleasure and that of his listening audience.

He has won the public’s award and the stage performance award at Petite-Vailée’s 2001 Festival en Chanson. His extensive knowledge of French song writing has led him to travel the globe from Australia and Singapore to Germany, France and Belgium as an actor-musician.

When not touring the planet, he makes his home in Trois-Rivières, Qué.

He has many CD’s including songwriting “Les croque-morts n’ont pas congé” 2004 - Swing from ‘30s style “Swing road” 2008 - Two CDs (one studio 2013 and Live at Palais Montcalm, Québec City 2014)

Tickets are $20, available from Strait Sound in Sechelt, Gaia Fair Trade in Gibsons or at the door.

He will also be giving an accordion workshop on Sunday, Sept. 7 at 2 p.m., at Strait Sound Studio in Roberts Creek. Cost is $20. Call 604-886-8129 for more information and to register.
