Harvest Offering coffeehouse

St. John’s United Church presents Harvest Offering coffeehouse, a fundraising effort to continue the community ministry of offering their facility to community organizations for meetings, workshops and other events as well offering spiritual guidance and support to those in need.

Marvellous music, a mug of rich coffee, delectable desserts and a harvest offering of music awaits. The coffeehouse is this Saturday, Oct. 25, at 7 p.m. at the church in Davis Bay with a wonderful line-up of Sunshine Coast talent: Ken Dalgleish, Bits of String with Mark and Kaia, Bigger Bits of String with Graham Walker plus jazz vocalists Jacquie Allan and Wendy Hibbert. Tickets are $25, available at the church, Sechelt Visitor Centre, The Blackberry Shop (Lower Gibsons) and on-line at www.latimerandcompany.com. Partial proceeds go to the Sunshine Coast Food Bank.

Thriller

On Oct. 25, at 3 p.m. sharp look for Thriller at the Heritage Playhouse’s parking lot, 662 North Road in Gibsons.

Thrill The World is an annual worldwide attempt to break the largest simultaneous dance record with Michael Jackson’s Thriller. Thousands of people in cities around the world will learn the dance and perform it together on the day.

Thrill The World was also created so that each event could raise money for a local charity, in this case the Gibsons Landing Heritage Society that operates the Heritage Playhouse. The set time for everyone around the world is Oct. 25, 10 p.m. GMT making it Saturday, Oct. 25 at 3 p.m. sharp.

Last year 6,451 Zombies from 22 countries and six continents took part. Gibsons was one of them with 49 zombies! Rehearsals have already begun at Dominique’s Dance Studio, but you can go on-line and learn the dance at thrill theworld.com. Participants cost $10. Kunda African Culture

Presented by Heritage Playhouse Productions as part of their ongoing fundraiser, local residents and performers Kocassale Dioubate (Guinean-born descendant of his Mandingo peoples’ djeliba or griots — traditional musicians, singers, oral historians and keepers tribal culture), and partner Sasha Belle, are teaming up with their co-artists, a talented Victoria-based West African Mandingo dancer Andre Duranteau, and internationally renown Cuban percussionist and singer Isreal “Toto” Berriel, under the title of Kunda African Culture Music & Dance.

This fun evening of warm, family entertainment is this Saturday, Oct. 25 at 8 p.m. Packed with colour and energy, Kunda’s performance promises irresistible rhythm and contagious joy. Tickets are $20 for adults, and $15 for children available at Gaia’s Fair Trade, Laedeli and the Sechelt Visitor Centre.

If you’re feeling inspired, join Kunda on Sunday, Oct. 26 for one or both of their fun workshops: West African Djembe drumming with Dioubate from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. or Guinean Dance with Belle from 1:15 to 2:45 p.m. The workshops are $20 each or $30 for both and take place at the Heritage Playhouse.

The Sustainability Secret

The Green Film Series continues its fall season on Monday, Oct. 27 with the film Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret at the Gibsons Heritage Playhouse.

A second showing is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 29 in Sechelt at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre. The Wood Duck bus is scheduled to bring Pender Harbour residents to the screening in Sechelt.

This shocking yet humorous documentary reveals the absolutely devastating environmental impact large-scale factory farming has on our planet. Follow an intrepid filmmaker Kip Andersen as he uncovers one of the most destructive industries facing the planet today.

This year the series is offering season passes for $40 for all of the fall films. The passes are a way to support the Green Film Series to make sure these great documentary films continue to be shown on the Sunshine Coast.

AGMs

You are invited to attend the 12th annual general meeting this Saturday, Oct. 25 at 2 p.m. at the Gibsons Public Art Gallery and read the annual report and financial statements.

2015 memberships will be on sale at the meeting.

Art class

The art class of Mary Jean Brown has been moved to Wednesday, Oct. 29 and runs until Wed. Dec. 17 from 6 to 9 p.m.

If you have a painting that is unfinished, this is the perfect class for you. If you are half way through or have finished your painting, she will have you complete a smaller painting in either acrylics or watercolour. JavaJazz

Tickets are on sale now for JavaJazz, a female vocal jazz ensemble under the direction of Karen Edgar, who will be performing in concert next Saturday, Nov. 1 at 7:30 p.m. with partial proceeds to Yew Transition House.

The concert will be held at Bethel Baptist Church (corner of Trail and Mermaid, across from Fire Hall in Sechelt). Join them for an evening of smooth, easy listening jazz with some familiar tunes from the 1920 era to the 2000s.They will be accompanied by a great quartet featuring Miles Black (piano), Sacha Fassaert (guitar), Boyd Norman (stand-up bass) and Barry Taylor (drums). Special guest will be the very popular jazz and pop vocalist, Katherine Penfold.

Apologies

My apologies to all the friendly artists who invited me especially to their Art Crawl event last weekend. Unfortunately I missed a lot of it this year because I was undergoing eye surgery in Vancouver, but managed to attend a few events on Sunday. By all accounts it was a successful weekend.
