Harp for the winter solstice

Nadeau Ensemble

Janelle Nadeau with the Nadeau Ensemble will appear in a solstice show at the Arts Centre in Sechelt on Thursday, Dec. 21.

Fans of Winter Harp, the annual colourful performance of songs and story, will remember harpist and vocalist Janelle Nadeau. In 2016 Nadeau began a new holiday tradition and founded the Nadeau Ensemble. She will appear in a solstice show at the Arts Centre in Sechelt on Thursday, Dec. 21, presented by the Sunshine Coast Arts Council.

Nadeau on harp is joined by Joaquin Ayala, performing on a collection of rare instruments dating back to the ninth century.

Nadeau is an eclectic performer with music that draws from a diverse repertoire of classical, Celtic, original and contemporary tunes. She has taken to the stage with everyone from Diana Krall and Kanye West to the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and spent a decade touring across Western Canada with the acclaimed Celtic, medieval and classical music group Winter Harp.

For this holiday season Nadeau is releasing her new album, Star of Night. Listeners can expect rare instrument combinations and chord changes that breathe new life into classic songs such as Do You Hear What I Hear, Silent Night and O Come All Ye Faithful. There will also be a few surprises including a twist on Irish rock band U2’s single Peace on Earth.

“Perfect to engage in the spirit of the holiday with a fresh sound,” explains Nadeau.

The Nadeau Ensemble will perform in the intimate, informal setting of the Arts Centre in Sechelt (Medusa and Trail) at 7 p.m. on Dec. 21. Tickets are $25 from www.share-there.com or by calling 604-885-5412, or $30 at the door.
