Harbour Gallery shows Abstracted

There will be a reception this Saturday, May 7 from 2 to 5 p.m. with a performance at 3 by Reflections Vocal Ensemble. All are invited.

Altered at GPAG

Gibsons Public Art Gallery presents Altered with five female artists exploring the intersection of art and motherhood. The exhibition runs from May 5 to June6.

Angela Somerset, Sandy Buck, Danielle Arsenault, Natalie Grambow and Shiloh Sukkau will take part in the artists' reception this Saturday with a live installation performance at 2 p.m. and an artists' dialogue at 2:30.

In the Harbour View Room, Sarah Lipi shows The True Love with photographs and digital work on display. The artist's reception is this Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m.

Meet the author

Local author Dot Scott would like to meet this Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the newly opened Woods Showcase in Sunnycrest Mall.

In Scott's book, Girl in a Blue Bonnet, a young woman yearning for adventure volunteers as a Salvation Army missionary in South Africa in 1896. She soon finds herself caught up in the Boer War and must make some life changing decisions. Books are available for signing and for sale.

Mother's Day

Miss Berni G will be at the keyboards on Mother's Day, Sunday, May 8 from noon to 3 p.m. at Wheatberries Bistro, 818 Gibsons Way. She'll be playing some jazz and some oldies in an informal afternoon of music. All are invited.

Memphis

Treat your Mother to the electrifying 2010 Tony award-winning musical Memphis, captured live on Broadway in HD, and showing at the Raven's Cry Theatre in Sechelt.

From the underground dance clubs of 1950s in Memphis, Tenn., comes a new Broadway musical about fame, forbidden love and the birth of rock 'n' roll. It's sensuous, soulful, tuneful and exhilarating. Tunnel Six

Remember Tunnel Six? They kicked off last year's Gibsons Landing Jazz Festival. The international jazz collective will bepromoting their new release as they tour across Canada this May. The innovative sextet crosses geographical and musical boundaries to bring the products of their newest collaboration to audiences. They will be playing a house concert at Strait Sound in Roberts Creek on Tuesday, May 10. Tickets are $15. Doors at 7:30; show starts at 8 p.m. The ensemble will also be hosting an improvisation workshop on Tuesday, May 10 at 3:30 p.m. All instruments and vocalists are welcome. Soul talk

Tea dance

Deborah and Gerry Pageau, the ballroom dance teachers, are pleased to announce the Spring into Ballroom Dance event on May 14 at the Gibsons' and Area Community Centre.This will be a Tea Dance format, that is to say, during the afternoon from 3 to 5 p.m. Come with your partner and enjoy a full roster of ballroom dance rhythms including waltz, two step, rumba, cha cha, tango, jive, swing, smooth one step and Latin one step.This is a great chance for new and experienced dancers alike to dance and socialize in a comfortable, friendly atmosphere. Fibreworks

Jackie Abrams (www.jackieabrams.com) will be leading a workshop at the Fibre Works Gallery and Studio in Baskets! Paper! Colour! Hexagonal Weave from Thursday to Saturday, May 12 to 14 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Create baskets inspired by an Asian technique, the openwork hexagonal weave.Using contemporary materials, painted cotton papers, weave the first layer in the hexagonal weave, similar to Shaker cheese baskets.This is a framework to interlace second and third layers, or for layers of random weave and colour.Contact Yvonne Stowell for more at www.fibreworksgallery.com or call 604-883-2380.

Writing workshop

Join other writers for a workshop on Creating a Compelling Scene - a one day workshop for writers in all genres, on Saturday, May 14, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Dragon and Unicorn Farm, 2348 Highway 101 in Roberts Creek. Whether you're working with fiction, nonfiction, memoir, theatre or poetry, you will always want to take the reader there or as Ayn Rand puts it, to show events as if they were happening before the reader's eyes. In this workshop, author Claire Robson will lead participants in considering various elements of scene and how they can be best assembled to compel the reader's attention.
