GPAG hosts new show

Art Beat

Same, Same, But Different opened this week at the Gibsons Public Art Gallery and runs to Sunday, Feb. 1.

There is an opening reception this Saturday, Jan. 10 from 2 to 4 p.m.

Same, Same, But Different is an ever-changing collaborative exhibit by Joanna Rogers and Kelly Irving.

“We use this as a forum to show our new work, which, in some cases, has been directly influenced by an aspect of the other’s practice,” said the artists. “We both love layering: images, ideas, textures. We both experiment with form and materials in our work. And we share a similar quirky sense of humour.”

Although Rogers and Irving work in relative isolation and do not see each other’s new work until a show is hung, there are always pieces that look as though they were made to hang side-by-side.

“This is pure magic. Our exhibits are visually interesting containing both two- and three-dimensional work. And they are colourful and enigmatic.”

Astronomy

Charles Ennis, the president of the Sunshine Coast Centre of the RASC, will be doing a presentation on Small Observatories at 7:30 p.m. this Friday, Jan. 9, at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre.

He has interviewed the builders of more than 120 small observatories around the world in the process of writing a small observatories handbook. Come find out the fascinating and creative ways that amateur astronomers around the world view the heavens.

If you’ve been thinking of building a small observatory to house your telescope, this is a great opportunity to get information you need to make an informed decision. Admittance is by donation. Check out the Sunshine Coast site at: www.coastastronomy.ca for more information.

Poynter studio

Last winter the owner of Zocalo clothing, Joann Hetherington, offered artist Jan Poynter use of the space during its closure. She likes to see the place used for creative and community ventures.

Poynter is back again this year. From Jan. 20 to Feb. 20 she will be in studio at Zocalo, 441 Marine Drive, right across from the Landing Gallery and next to the Gibsons Public Art Gallery. It will be open to the public for certain hours and will offer weekend workshops plus studio time for students. Poynter has invited Christy Sverre and Jen Drysdale to join her this year, and artists will be welcome for coffee and informal discussion on Thursday salon afternoons.
