Four friends at Chamber Music weekend

Pender Harbour Music Society

Lorraine Min on piano and Terrance Tam on violin with Pamela Highbaugh Aloni, cellist, and Yariv Aloni, violist, will perform together at the Pender Harbour Music Society’s Chamber Music weekend Jan. 27 and 28 at the School of Music in Madeira Park.

Sometimes coordinating schedules of busy, professional musicians is the hardest part of organizing a weekend of music. On Jan. 27 and 28 the Pender Harbour Music Society presents their midwinter weekend of chamber music with four excellent musicians. Organizers have been planning this for the past two years to coordinate everyone’s schedules so that all four – all of whom are friends and/or spouses – could come together and form a quartet.

Terrance Tam on violin is concert master with the Victoria Symphony and is also a practising physician in Victoria. Lorraine Min will perform on piano. Both were performers at the Music Society’s Winter Series a few years ago and their duo recital was a huge success.

“Our audience has requested their return,” said concert organizer Margaret Skelly, “and we were able to have Terrance here at a summer Chamber Festival again to huge audience acclaim. We are delighted to welcome Lorraine back to our stage.”

The other half of the quartet is Yariv Aloni on viola – a familiar face from previous summer Chamber Music festivals – and Pamela Highbaugh Aloni on cello. She is a founding member of the renowned Lafayette String Quartet from Victoria who will return to the summer’s Chamber Music Festival this year.

The Saturday programme focuses mostly on Mozart and opens with the Mozart E flat Major Piano Quartet on the very day, Jan. 27, that marks the 262nd birthday of Mozart. Sunday’s programme is varied with piano quartet repertoire by Mahler, Brahms, Beethoven and Schumann. From Sibelius the ensemble has chosen a Duo for Violin and Viola and a Trio for Violin, Viola and Violoncello.

Both programmes start at 2 p.m. at the School of Music in Madeira Park. Tickets are $25 per concert and are available at Harbour Insurance, Sechelt Visitor Centre and penderharbourmusic.ca/concert-tickets
