FOG show opens soon

Art Beat

Friends of the Gallery (FOG) is an annual exhibition of work by Coast artists every January at the Doris Crowston Gallery at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre in Sechelt. All current and new members are invited to display one work of art they have produced in 2014. The intake and deadline for bringing your work into the Arts Centre is Sunday, Jan. 4 from 1 to 3:30 p.m. The group show opens on Wednesday, Jan. 7 with a reception from 7 to 9 p.m. and runs to Feb. 8. Expect a crowd at the reception — in the last few years the number of artists has reached nearly 100. The Arts Centre is at the corner of Trail and Medusa. See www.artscouncil.com for more details.

FibreWorks

FibreWorks Gallery near Madeira Park reminds you that their December show Made by Hand 2014 continues through to Sunday, Jan. 4 with regular days and hours of operation — Wednesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. After that, the Gallery will be closed Jan. 5 to April 4 to provide some studio time for Yvonne Stowell. FibreWorks Studio will be open, by appointment, during this time to allow for the fibre and yarn enthusiasts to continue to create throughout the winter months. For more details, email [email protected] or call 604-883-2380.

Festival prep

The syllabus for the 42nd annual Festival of the Performing Arts is now published — online and in hard copy. Online, go to coast
festival.com to access it. The syllabus covers piano, voice, choir, strings, folk instrumental, percussion, woodwinds and brass, and dance. The 2015 Festival of the Performing Arts runs from April 13 to 29. For more information, contact Sue Carson at [email protected].

Astronomy

Charles Ennis, the president of the Sunshine Coast Centre of the RASC, will be doing a presentation on Small Observatories at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 9 at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre. He has interviewed the builders of more than 120 small observatories around the world in the process of writing a small observatories handbook. Come find out the fascinating and creative ways that amateur astronomers around the world view the heavens.

If you’ve been thinking of building a small observatory to house your telescope, this is a great opportunity to get information you need to make an informed decision. Admittance is by donation. Check out the Sunshine Coast site at: www.coastastronomy.ca/ for contact and schedule information.

Poynter studio

Last winter the owner of Zocalo clothing, Joann Hetherington, offered artist Jan Poynter use of the space during its closure. She likes to see the place used for creative and community ventures.

Poynter is back again this year. From Jan. 20 to Feb. 20 she will be in studio at Zocalo, 441 Marine Drive, right across from the Landing Gallery and next to the Gibsons Public Art Gallery. It will be open to the public for certain hours and will offer weekend workshops plus studio time for students. Poynter has invited Christy Sverre and Jen Drysdale to join her this year, and artists will be welcome for coffee and informal discussion on Thursday Salon afternoons.
