First of the season

Art Beat

Coast Cultural Alliance presents the first Artesia coffeehouse of the year this Friday, Jan. 30 at 8 p.m. at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre in Sechelt.

Young composer/pianist Brison Geue sits at the grand piano. Next up is David J. Taylor, a multi-disciplinary artist, record producer, audio engineer, singer and songwriter performing on guitar and piano. The last set features Sostenuto (meaning sustained), a duo of Anna Lumiere, piano and accordion, and Serena Eades, violin. Tickets are $10 at the door which opens at 7 p.m., music at 8. Guitar doctor

Ken McBride hosts his CD release party at the Heritage Playhouse this Saturday, Jan. 31. McBride enjoyed playing and singing in his bands while working on other musicians’ ailing guitars, as the Guitar Doctor. When he became a solo artist, he was compelled to write music that came from his very soul. He will be showcasing his CD, Tone. Doors open at 7:30, show at 8 p.m. Tickets are $20, available at Laedeli in Sunnycrest Mall and the Blackberry Shop on Gower Point Road.

Playback

Dance to classic rock hits of the 1960s and ‘70s from the band Playback at Gibsons Legion this Saturday, Jan. 31 at 8 p.m. These fun, friendly folks serve up the tunes non-stop. Members: $5 and guests $10.

Reischman and Jaybirds

Heritage Playhouse Productions presents John Reischman & The Jaybirds on Sunday, Feb. 1 at 2 p.m.

With a fourth critically-acclaimed album and expanded touring schedule, the group is an award-winning band delivering a truly fresh blend of original songs and instrumentals, old-time heritage and bluegrass power. Tickets are $20 advance ($25 at the door) at Laedeli Gifts & Cards and Sechelt Visitor Centre.

Return of the River

In the film Return of the River, First Nations, environmentalists, government, industry and community members work together to set a river free and bring hope for the future. The film opens the spring season of the Green Film Series on Monday, Feb. 2 at the Gibsons Heritage Playhouse with a second showing on Thursday, Feb. 5 in Sechelt at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre, both showings at 7:30 p.m. A discussion will follow the film including an update on the Site C dam. Big Painting

Big Painting Art Class from Mary Jean Brown starts on Feb. 5 and runs for eight weeks — every Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. This class is for beginners and professionals. Phone 604-886-3849 to register.

Love is Strange

As part of its spring series, Queer Projections is pleased to present Love is Strange on Friday, Feb. 6 at 7:30 p.m. at the Gibsons Heritage Playhouse.

House concert

Writing program

A new course, Write with Confidence, is offered by Capilano University, taught by instructor Janet Millar, from Feb. 17 to March 31.

Register by calling 604-885-9310 by Feb. 6 to avoid disappointment as courses without sufficient advance enrolment are cancelled.

Addendum

The tutoring workshop led by Kathleen Hovey at St. Hilda’s while the Gryphon Trio performed on the Coast was held under the auspices of the Coast Recital Society, thanks to a grant they received from the BC Touring Council’s Community Presenter Youth Engagement Program.
