Fibreworks show opens

This Saturday, July 19, is the opening of Recovery Method with hand-hooked rug maker Michelle Sirois-Silver at Fibreworks Gallery (at the yurts) in Madeira Park.
Nir Blue
This Saturday July 19, the local pianist and composer Nir Blue will be performing a solo piano show at the Gibsons Heritage Playhouse at 7:30 p.m.

This Saturday, July 19, is the opening of Recovery Method with hand-hooked rug maker Michelle Sirois-Silver at Fibreworks Gallery (at the yurts) in Madeira Park. The artist’s exhibition incorporates traditional hand-hooking techniques with deconstructed screen-printing and other multi-media techniques. She will be at the gallery for the opening of the exhibition from 2 to 4 p.m. All are invited. Balance

The Gibsons Public Art Gallery announces a series of talks in conjunction with its current exhibition, Balance. On Saturday, July 19, at 2 p.m. Miyuki Shinkai, curator of the SC Glass Artists exhibition, offers a tour. Then on Sunday, July 20, at 2 p.m. artist Mardi Ahmed will present a talk.

Landing Gallery

The Gibsons Landing Gallery presents Look@YOU on Saturday, July 19, from 1 to 5 p.m. Artist Stephen Murphy will photograph you and your favourite people with his antique Polaroid camera. Get your vintage portrait for $5.

Another event takes place the following Saturday, July 26, from 7 to 9 p.m. when photographer Barry Haynes will share techniques in his Photoshop Lightroom process. Sign up in advance; 10 participants only. Cost is $25 and you can pre-register at the gallery. 

Sechelt summer

The Sechelt Summer Music series continues this Saturday, July 19, with an evening show at 7 p.m. at the Sechelt Library lawn featuring The Rakish Angles with special guest Lowry Olafson. Hear newgrass, gypsy jazz, Latin and old time from the Rakish Angles, while Olafson performs original songs, humorous anecdotes and lively violin instrumentals.

For the afternoon show at 12:30 p.m. check out the library lawn where Brothers in Farms will perform West coast funk, Latin, roots and reggae.

Music in the Landing

Music in the Landing starts Friday afternoon at the Gibsons Farmers Market on Gower Point Road from 1 to 3 p.m. Pick up your produce while enjoying young local singer/songwriter Sam McLennan, freshly back from two years at the Selkirk College music program.

Friday evening from 7 to 8 p.m. in the gazebo at the end of the wharf, Dan Richter, Boyd Norman and Simon Hocking of the Rakish Angles will liven up the waterfront. Saturday morning from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Charlotte Wrinch will fill Pioneer Square with music.

Saturday from 7 to 8:45 p.m., bring your picnic blankets and lawn chairs to Winegarden Waterfront Park for an evening of irresistible rhythms, international instruments, Brazilian guitar and vocals from Juno award winner Celso Machado.

On Sunday, at the Sun Dial Stage (which technically should be called the Compass Rosette Stage), from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., enjoy the acoustic side of Steve Jack and G Willy, vocals and guitars.

Nir Blu plays

If you’ve never heard Nir Blu play piano, you are in for a treat.

This Saturday, July 19, the local pianist and composer will perform a solo piano show at Gibsons Heri-tage Playhouse at 7:30 p.m.

Blu will play a mix of his newly composed melodies: jazz, blues, classical and world fusion, all instrumental.

Tickets are $15, available at the door or in advance at MELOmania, Laedeli and Gaia’s Fair Trade. Doors open at 7, and the show starts at 7:30 p.m.

Art for Inner I

Take part in an arty afternoon at Heaven on Earth on Sunday, July 20, from 2 to 5 p.m. Art for the Inner I presents Circles and Spirals: Mandalas and Labyrinths — a workshop for all skill levels. Explore your unique creativity with art therapist Rose Clarke. Fee is $40, all materials included. Heaven on Earth is at 1161 Sunshine Coast Highway in Gibsons (next to Holy Crap). Arnstein concert

Pianist Peter Arnstein returns to the Sunshine Coast for a concert this Sunday, July 20, at 2 p.m. at St. Hilda’s Anglican Church in Sechelt. Tickets are at the Sechelt Visitor Centre, Harbour Insurance, Gaia’s Fair Trade and Laedeli Gifts, as well as at the door. Adult are $20 and seniors are $15.  Students are $10.

Art program

For the second year, the Sunshine Coast Arts Council and international marine artist Rogest (AKA Ron Steven) have joined forces to bring the summer art program to art-enthused youth on the Coast. Rogest will introduce the students to art and the ocean and once again create a collaborative art work to donate to the Sunshine Coast Conservation Association.

The program takes place Monday to Wednesday, July 28 to 30, for youth 9 to 12 years old, at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre in Sechelt, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Registration is $25. Please call the Art Centre or drop by for more information 604-885- 5412.
