Creek Daze is a summer highlight

On Saturday, Aug. 12, the long awaited highlight of Roberts Creek summer takes place, Creek Daze. It kicks off with the Higgledy-Piggledy Parade at 11 a.m. To be part of the parade, meet at the Roberts Creek Hall by 10:30 a.m.  Everyone is welcome – come out and participate, then head to the mandala from noon to 5 p.m. to enjoy music, dance and local vendors.

Coffee House

This, Friday, Aug. 11, enjoy the monthly coffee house at the School of Music in Madeira Park. Ken Gatagiri performs on vocals with guitar and piano, also Teal Loverock, singer/songwriter and the Spirit Singers, local vocal and instrumental ensemble. Edmund Arceo marks the return of Pender Harbour’s favourite tenor. Doors at 7 p.m. and music at 7:30 p.m. Admission is by donation (suggested $10) at the door. Refreshments are for sale during intermission.

Art Show

On Saturday, Aug. 12, artist Giorgio Michael Binns opens a Multimedia Fine Art Show with a reception at One Flower One Leaf, on Marine Drive, (the former Landing Gallery) Gibsons. Live music is by Susan Ssun from 2 to 4 p.m. All are welcome.

A.D.D.

On Saturday, Aug. 12 the live entertainment is supplied by A.D.D. featuring Michelle Morand. That’s funk and rock and roll at the Gibsons Legion starting at 8 p.m.

Cut-up songs

The Song Butchers will be at the Roberts Creek Legion for Creek Daze, Aug. 12, from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m., bringing a vast range of songs, popular and obscure, only occasionally dissected into their constituent parts and reassembled in unfamiliar ways. This concert they will be unveiling the Butcher’s Jukebox, when members of the audience will be asked to help program the set.

Sechelt summer

The Sechelt Summer Music Series presents a free concert on Saturday, Aug. 12 on the Library Lawn Stage, at noon and 1 p.m. Combining an adept finger-style acoustic guitar technique with vocals, Ken Dunn’s song-writing delivers a strong, positive message directly to the soul of the listener. When performing with partner Anna Green, their vocal harmonies enhance the emotional depth and character of live performances. Also performing is the Billy Hillpicker Band, who have been quietly establishing a loyal following over the past decade or so and have become known as one of the favourite good time, foot-stomping acoustic roots, bluegrass and folk music bands on the Sunshine Coast.

Live mike

Janice Williams is hosting another Live Mike Night on Wednesday, Aug. 16, from 7 to 9 p.m. and invites everyone to share their writing, songs, dances, rants, chants and memories in five-minute time slots. Bring a treat if you like to this supportive, arty environment, where little dog Moose wears his lei for the occasion. Listeners/viewers are welcome. Find the venue on the top floor of Gibsons Cinema; come up the back stairs on the hotel side of theatre.

Dine and dance

The Sunshine Coast Golf and Country Club is again hosting its annual dinner/dance Nine and Dine and Dancing Under the Stars, featuring the Creek Big Band with local vocalist Davis Dalgleish on Friday, Aug. 18. The prime rib dinner is at 7 p.m., entertainment at 8 p.m. Golf is included but not required. Varied pricing for members, non-members and dinner only guests. Call 604-885-9212 for reservations.

Coming soon

Vocalist Trudi Diening and pianist Miles Black present Acoustically Sound, a performance on Saturday, Aug. 19 at 8 p.m. at the Heritage Playhouse, Gibsons. Tickets are $20 from WOW Gallery, MELOmania, Strait Music and share-there.com or at the door.

Present Tense

Gibsons Public Art Gallery is looking for current creative work from GPAG members for  a show titled Present Tense to run Sept. 9 to Oct. 1. Deadline for entries is Monday, Sept. 4 at 4 p.m. Entry into the exhibition is open to all members of the Gibsons Public Art Gallery. Submitted works must have been completed within the last two years. They are looking for two-dimensional work (paintings, photographs, drawings, prints, mixed media), three-dimensional pieces (sculpture) and fibre arts. Displays of film and video will be considered, but acceptance will depend on the work’s presentation requirements. Deliver work to the Gallery between Aug. 28 and Sept. 4, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. All are welcome to attend the opening reception on Saturday, Sept. 9 from  2 to 4 p.m. See details at www.gpag.ca/submissions
