Modern Terror
Roberts Creek’s home grown punk band Modern Terror hosts an album release party on April 14 at Roberts Creek Legion. Doors open at 8:30 p.m., music at 9:30 p.m.

A wearable art fashion show and sale is a highlight event for the Sechelt Seniors Activity Centre (5604 Trail Ave.) on Saturday, April 14 at 7 p.m. It includes music and dance performances. The fabric coats are cut from a pattern chosen by artists and embellished with paint or embroidery. To learn about some of the pieces in the show, see Coats of Paint on Facebook. The fashion show is the latest in the Centre’s ongoing fundraising efforts to sponsor a family of Syrian refugees into Canada who have been waiting years for their permanent home. Modern Terror 

Roberts Creek’s home grown punk band Modern Terror is set to unleash their first full length studio album upon the world. The release party is on April 14 at Roberts Creek Legion. Doors open at 8:30 p.m. and music starts at 9:30 p.m. Members pay $8, guests $15.

This home town show will be the premiere of Hardcore ’18. The band will be giving away free copies of the album on download cards at the door. It was recorded at The Farm Studios in Roberts Creek with Juno award-winning producer GGGarth Richardson (Rage Against The Machine, Rise Against). The album is crammed full of classic punk rock goodness that will have you banging your head and tapping your toes.

Joining the bill will be Kownterpoint from Vancouver playing punky, groovy, reggae skank. Also on the bill is S.K.A. from Vancouver blending covers and originals mainly focused on a classic ska/reggae vibe, mixing elements of jazz, blues and rock. For more, see: www.modernterrorband.com

Grizzlies Author 

Author Pat Ardley presents her memoir, Grizzlies, Gales and Giant Salmon: Life at a Rivers Inlet Fishing Lodge (Harbour Publishing, $24.95) at the Sechelt Public Library (5797 Cowrie St.) on Friday, April 13 at 7 p.m. Books will be available for purchase courtesy of Talewind Books. She will also be stopping by EarthFair Store in Madeira Park on Friday at 2 p.m. Readings are free, and all are welcome. In Vancouver, Pat met George Ardley, and together they became junior lighthouse keepers and built their own fishing lodge in Rivers Inlet, which grew into a hugely successful vacation retreat with loyal clientele. In her book, Ardley, who is never one to back down from an adventure, shares stories of thrilling encounters with hungry grizzlies and cougars, harrowing boat trips in never-ending storms and touching anecdotes about raising a family in B.C.’s coastal wilderness. Opera 

On Saturday, April 14 at 9:30 a.m. Verdi’s opera Luisa Miller comes to the Raven’s Cry Theatre screen in HD, live by satellite from the New York Metropolitan Opera. It stars Sonya Yoncheva as the peasant girl Luisa, opposite Piotr Beczala as Rodolfo in Verdi’s tragedy about a young woman who sacrifices her own happiness in an attempt to save her father’s life. Guitar Concert 

The Coast Guitar Group presents a duo featuring Marc Teicholz, guitar director of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and Michael Partington, director of the guitar program at the University of Washington, with the music of Johannes Brahms, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco and Fernando Sor. It’s on Sunday, April 15 at 2 p.m. at St. Bart’s Anglican Church in Gibsons, 659 North Rd. Admission is $25 at the door. For more about the group, call 604-886-0031. 

Creative Creek 

Creative in the Creek is on Thursday, April 19 at 7:30 p.m. at the Gumboot Café in Roberts Creek and is hosted by Jess Stephens Whale and David Roche. It’s a supportive and fun space for new and veteran performers (your neighbours) to share their creativity. This month happily features Chop Sticks Haul Water, original songs by Alex Carota, the insight and wisdom of Biyaals, a Sarah Tompkins super story and Kyra Kaisla in her final Creative in the Creek before moving to Austria. God will launch several new commandments for all to ignore. Pay your admission donation when they pass the hat. 

Poetry Evening 

Sechelt Library invites you to a Poetry Evening with poets Susan Telfer, John Pass, Dorothy Stott and Philip Jager on Thursday, April 19 at 7 p.m. These local authors will be reading from their work plus one poem from each of their favourite poets. Writers’ Retreat 

The Writer’s Union of Canada (www.writersunion.ca) in co-operation with Federation of BC Writers (www.bcwriters.ca) is hosting a spring Writers’ Retreat at Linwood House in Roberts Creek, April 27 to 29. All local and B.C. writers are welcome to participate in a variety of activities.

Workshops featured at the retreat include: Creative Non-Fiction with Lynne Van Luven; From Research to Fiction with Michelle Barker; Manoeuvring the Media Ocean: Social Media for Authors with Sapha Burnell; and Fire Up Your Commitment to Your Writing with Donna Barker as well as a free session of Shut Up and Write!  An Open Mic on Saturday night will feature writers reading their best work.

Admission to the workshops is free for writers who are currently paid-up members of TWUC or BC FED. For writers without membership, each workshop is $15.
