Classic Christmas

The members of the Sunshine Coast Community Orchestra Association bring you an afternoon of classic Christmas music. From Vivaldi and Holst to Johnny Marks and traditional carols, the Junior String Ensemble and Adult String Orchestra will fill your hearts with cheer.

The Suncoast Concert Band offers music by Vince Guaraldi and a medley of seasonal songs. Conductor Janice Brunson also selected a work by Vancouver composer Bob Buckley and an arrangement of Away in a Manger by the SCCOA’s John Frederickson. The Coast Symphony Orchestra, led by Edette Gagne, features carols and sing-along. Alec Tebbutt and Gagne will lead the audience in several carols.

The concert is this Sunday, Dec. 14 at 2:30 p.m. at the Sechelt Indian Band Hall. Tickets are at the door, at Strait Music in Sechelt and at Laedeli in Sunnycrest Mall.

Linwood House Ministries invites you to join them for an elegant evening of “mingle and jingle” this Sunday, Dec. 14 at 7 p.m. Celebrate the season with wine, canapés, desserts and music. Proceeds from each $100 ticket go to support their work to empower women and girls, especially those caught in the cycles of addiction, abuse and sex trafficking. Even if you can’t attend, your ticket includes a chance to win a door prize and a $75 charitable tax receipt.

Select artwork

Art aficionados get ready for some festive cheer at the Gibsons Public Art Gallery Dec. 18 to 20 from 11 a.m. 4 p.m. Select artwork from the permanent collection will be exhibited as well as a few gems that they hope to conserve. Paintings from the “attic” will be offered for sale with proceeds assisting conservation projects, as well as unique gifts and artwork for sale at the gift shop. You can enter a draw, donate to the food bank or enjoy warm cider and cookies.

Synchronicity

There’s a stellar little arts festival, Synchronicity, on the Sunshine Coast. But getting the dollars to keep a project like this on the go is a constant goal. This year, in time for the holidays, organizers are selling advance ticket packages for Synchronicity 2015. See: www.synchronicityfestival.ca

Poetry night

After a spectacular debut last month at Roberts Creek Cohousing, Jeffrey Renn is returning for a repeat performance of Poetry Night in Canada. It’s a compilation of poems by Canadian poets, each one performed by Renn using his 25 years of experience as an actor. It’s on Thursday, Dec. 18 at 7:30 p.m. at the Roberts Creek Cohousing Common House at 1131 Emery Rd.

Landing show

December at The Landing Gallery in Gibsons features The Small Painting Show. All pieces are 12x12 or smaller and priced under $150. You will also find new work from the 20 different artists who are part of the Landing Co-op Gallery including four new artists: Gigi Hoeller, Jen Drysdale, Cindy Cantelon and Kathryn Kristmanson. Winter hours at the Gallery are 1 to 4 p.m. daily.

Digital art

For the first time in its history, the Canadian Federation of Artists is sponsoring a juried digital art exhibition at the Federation Gallery on Granville Island, and two of local artist and author Roxanne Gregory’s works were selected.

Award winners were feted at a reception Nov. 27, when jurors explained to the crowd some of the challenges in jurying and the diverse differences in the creative process inherent in digital art. Digital works were exhibited printed on paper, acrylic, plexiglass, aluminum and canvas.
