This year's show will feature the work of established artists: Liz de Beer, Susanne Biden, Maggie Citrin, Shey Smith, Dianne Fisher Amaral and Pia Sillem, and emerging artists: Marilyn Butt, Betty Keller, Joanne Scanlan, Kez Sherwood andHeather Waddell. The jurors are coming to the opening at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 29, and will be talking to the public about ceramics in general as well as to the artists about their work.

United Artists

The St. John's United Artists Art Show opens at 1 p.m. this Friday (June 24) and continues Saturday, with an exhibition of paintings by local artists. The reception runs from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at St. John's United Church. Call Eileen Berczik at 604-885-4732for more details.

Pender Choir

The Pender Harbour Choir with director Joy McLeod and pianist Paula Seward present an eclectic concert of English music, from madrigals to the Beatles and beyond, entitled As Time Goes By, at 7 p.m. tonight, June 24, at Pender Harbour Music School.The small group, the SASSPenders, will perform, as will the men's and women's ensembles. Tickets are $15, available at Bluewaters Books, Monkeychips and Laedeli.

Musical benefit

Sounds of Summer offers light classical music by Gemini, the duo of Val and Julie Rutter, this Saturday, June 25 at 8 p.m. The showalso features voice artist Richard Austin in a benefit concert for a breast cancer survivor. The concert is at Living Faith Lutheran Church in Davis Bay. Tickets are $20 adults and $15 for ages 16 and under.Ticket sales/reservations are at 604-885-4099 or at the door.

Altered

Catch Altered at the Gibsons Legion on Saturday for the Birthday Club. Dance the night away to classic rock, starting at 8 p.m. That's Charlie Rose on Boingy Boingy drums; Rick Good, bass; and Ken McBride, guitar. If you have a birthday in May or June, bring a potluck dish to share, 7 p.m. No cover charge; everyone welcome.

Foggies Return

The Foggy Hogtown Boys from Toronto return June 28 for a show at St. Bart's Church.

With more than 1,000 live shows under their belts, the Foggies have earned their reputation for good bluegrass.

The band members - Andrew Collins (mandolin, fiddle), Chris Coole (guitar, banjo), John Showman (fiddle), Chris Quinn (banjo, guitar) and Max Heineman (bass) - make up a who's who of Canadian acoustic music. Currently, the band is finishing their sixth album, The Hogtown Sessions. These shows usually sell out, so get there early. Tickets are $15 at the door; show starts at 8 p.m.

Cherry Orchard

On Thursday, June 30, at 7 p.m., the National Theatre in London presents (via HD satellite) Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard at Raven's Cry Theatre in Sechelt.

NT associate director Howard Davies, whose recent productions have earned huge critical acclaim, directs the classic Russian play. Zoe Wannamaker (star of Harry Potter) will play Madame Ranevskaya. Ticket prices are $22 general, $18 senior, $14 child/student. Please do not bring children under the age of six years. Tickets are available at the theatre.

Wordlink

Shelley Harrison Rae reminds writers that the word link lounge is open all summer for "It's in The Cards" on Tuesdays (10 a.m. to noon) at a Sandy Hook location. She will encourage you in some writing aerobics, taking prompts from her many sets ofinspirational cards. The cards work well for a group of any size (even a group of one), so drop in and stay connected to your writing. Shade plus Steve

Toronto-based indie pop/rock band Shade will be performing onFriday, July 1, at 8 p.m. at the Gumboot Café in Roberts Creek.The bandfeatures Jane Gowan from the Vancouver-based band Spygirl, and for the West Coast leg of their tour features members of The Gutenbergs, who have a history of memorable performances on the Coast. Thedebut Shade CDis produced by Tim Vesley of the Rheostatics, and was recorded in the Tragically Hip's Bath House Studios. Opening the evening is local musician Steve Wright who will be debuting new material and sitting in with the band for a few numbers.

Bag of Books

On Canada Day, July 1, the Gibsons Public Art Gallery will hold their annual Bag of Books Sale at the sidewalk level of the gallery on Gower Point Road from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Buy a cotton eco-bag for $10and fill it with books for free.This fundraiser for the Gallery offers a great selection of books.

Festival news

This year's provincial Festival of Performing Arts in Kamloops, the week of June 6, was a great success. Among the many performers, three Sunshine Coast youth delighted everyone.Bryn Davies played his own composition, Bouree op. 13, plus Bach Invention no. 1, and also Hazy Sunday by Gibsons music teacher Carolynn Cordsen and Lois E. Kidd.Axel Loitz played Nocturne op. 35 no. 2and Anthony Willmer played Nocturne op. 35 no. 1, both written by Cordsen.Themusic is available at Woods Showcase in Gibsons.
