The Coast Recital Society (CRS) presents cellist Raphael Wallfisch and pianist Rena Sharon at Raven's Cry Theatre in Sechelt this Sunday, Dec. 1, at 2:30 p.m., with a pre-concert chat at 1:30.

Recognized internationally for his "expressive power and breathtaking bravura," Wallfisch is one of the most celebrated cellists performing on the international stage.

Born in London into a family of musicians, he won the prestigious Gaspar Cassadò Cello Competition at the age of 24. Since then he has enjoyed a world-wide career playing with such orchestras as the London Philharmonic, BBC Symphony, English Chamber Orchestra, Hallé, Leipzig Gewandhaus, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Czech Philharmonic and many others.

His extensive discography explores both the mainstream concerto repertoire and countless lesser-known works. Britain's leading composers have worked closely with him, many having written works especially for him. These include Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, James MacMillan and John Tavener. Raphael plays a 1760 Gennaro Gagliano cello.

Born in Montreal, Sharon is professor of collaborative piano studies at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. Sharon is well known to CBC radio audiences.

Among Canada's foremost chamber musicians, she has collaborated in recital with many distinguished artists including Ben Heppner, Steven Isserlis, Scott St. John, Pamela Frank, James Somerville, Lara St. John, Martin Beaver, James Ehnes and Susan Platts.

Sharon lectures extensively about art song topics and chamber music and is the founder and artistic director of the Vancouver International Song Institute.

The program for the Wallfisch/Sharon recital includes music by Stravinsky, Debussy, Bach and Brahms.
