The Sunshine Coast Arts Council presents Carte Blanche, a juried multi-disciplinary exhibition featuring works by Coast artists from Langdale to Lund.
The show gives local artists more opportunity to exhibit their work, especially while visitors are on the Coast for festivals and other events.
Carte Blanche is defined as the unrestricted power to act at one's own discretion; to have permission to do something in any way one chooses.
The range of visual media on display at the Doris Crowston Gallery includes drawing, painting, photography, digital media, mixed media, assemblage and wood sculpture. A volunteer group of artists selected the work from over 100 entries. Please join the artists for the opening reception, Wednesday, Aug. 14, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre, 5714 Medusa St. in Sechelt.
The Show runs until Sept. 8.

Meet the author
David Lee will be making an author appearance at the Earth Fair Store (formerly Bluewaters Books) in Madeira Park this Saturday, Aug. 10, from 1 to 3 p.m. It's an informal visit to celebrate the publication of his novel Commander Zero, which is set in Pender Harbour. Drop in and chat with him.
Fiddle music
Oliver Swain's Big Machine is on the road this summer with an incredible line-up, featuring one of Canada's top young musical innovators, demon fiddler Jaron Freeman-Fox, who will be performing opening sets at various shows as well as with the Big Machine, and vocalist Emily Braden, who recently took home Best of the Best at New York's prestigious JazzMobile Vocal Competition.
Regular Big Machine members complete the line-up, 17-year-old guitar prodigy Quinn Bachand or axe-wielding Adam Dobres. The show comes to the Coast this Saturday, Aug. 10, at Gibsons Heritage Playhouse, and they will be performing with our own Bad to the Bow fiddlers. Show is at 7:30 p.m, Tickets are $14 in advance or $16 at the door.
Summer choir
The Sechelt Summer Choir concert is at 7 p.m. this Saturday, Aug. 10, at St. Hilda's Church, Sechelt.
Singers from Pender Harbour to Gibsons enjoy coming together to sing in Summer Choir when other choirs on the Coast take a break during July and August.
This year they areperforming the combination of the Vivaldi Gloria and parts of the Bach Magnificat.This is the third year for Sechelt Summer Choir, which involves the delightful combination of Sara Douglas, School District No. 46 music teacher and soprano, and her long-time colleague and Vancouver friend, organist and choral director David Millard. They were both students of the late Bill Bourns 20 years ago and work together as a team. Tom Kellough will be piano collaborator for both works. Admission is by donation at the door, which makes it easy for audience members to attend.
Art Stroll
Take a walk in Gibsons Landing this weekend to enjoy a variety of galleries, businesses and cafés. All are invited to the gala reception this Saturday, Aug. 10, at 4:30 p.m. at the Gibsons Public Art Gallery. Find brochures listing events and hours of opening at all participating venues.
House concert
On Sunday, Aug. 11, Wildwood Sessions House Concerts presents Martyn Joseph at 8 p.m. (doors at 7). The Welsh musician has played the Vancouver Folk Festival a few times and is an incredible singer/songwriter. Call 604-740-9944 for information and reservations.
Circle Craft artists
Circle Craft Cooperative is pleased to present a group exhibition of its members in celebration of Circle Craft's 40th anniversary. The 40 Years and Beyond celebration takes place Aug. 5 to 23 at the Pendulum Gallery, HSBC Building, 885 West Georgia in Vancouver. Sunshine Coast artisans figure prominently in the show. Local artists include: Kelly Backs (metal, member since 2011, Roberts Creek), Wayne Harjula (glass, member since 2004, Gibsons), Kaye Miller (wood, member since 1978, Roberts Creek), Laurie Rolland (ceramics, member since 1991, Sechelt) and Miyuki Shinkai (glass, member since 2004, Gibsons).

Romer art
Artworks Gallery & Framing, 5685 Cowrie St. in Sechelt,will be featuring several Brian Romer West Coast landscapes during the Festival of the Written Arts,Aug. 15 to 18. The show will run from Aug. 12 to Sept. 14, with an informal reception on Thursday, Aug. 15 from 6 to 8 p.m.
Tutu magic
Last week's PechaKucha evening at the Gibsons Public Art Gallery was tutu much, especially when host and organizer Wendy Crumpler appeared in a red ballet tutu to introduce the eclectic group of presenters.
Anna Banana's Is it Art? was fascinating. Sarama's account of the Salish Sea was hard hitting, Kevin Broome's Pattern Recognition was sublime, and Barbara Moustafa's digital work was magical, to name only a few of the evening's entertainments. Almost $800 was raised for the Arts Building and GPAG.
PechaKucha Night returns to Gibsons in November. The next PKN will take place in Sechelt in October.
