Calle Verde in concert

Calle Verde and the Sunshine Coast Dance Society present Calle Verde: Flamenco, an evening of inspiring, original flamenco music and dance at the Gibsons Heritage Playhouse next Friday, Sept. 19.

This five-piece professional ensemble from Vancouver is a favourite with audiences wherever they perform, evoking the many moods of this highly expressive art form.

From fiery passion to sorrow and joy, Verde ignites the stage with precise percussive rhythm, lyrical guitar and violin, soulful vocals and powerful movement.

Verde is firmly rooted in this style of flamenco performance, but they are not afraid to spread the wings of the art form by including instrumentation and influences that are not part of the puro (pure) flamenco tradition. With cajon (Peruvian box drum) and violin, they incorporate elements from a number of other musical genres. Don’t be surprised if you think you detect some influences from Celtic music, Gypsy jazz or even a riff from a pop song.

Tickets are $20 for the concert, available at Peggy Sue’s in Gibsons Landing, MELOmania in Roberts Creek and the Sechelt Visitors Centre.

Prior to the performance, two flamenco dance workshops will be held at the Heritage Playhouse on Wednesday, Sept. 17, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. for dancers with no previous flamenco dance experience and from 6:30 to 8 p.m. for dancers with some previous flamenco dance experience.
