Brilliance on stage

Coast Recital Society
CRS

The Coast Recital Society opens its stellar 2015-2016 concert season on Saturday afternoon, Oct. 17, with a recital by the brilliant American pianist Jeremy Denk. The concert at the Raven’s Cry Theatre begins at 2:30 p.m.

Denk is one of America’s foremost pianists – an artist the New York Times hails as someone “you want to hear no matter what he performs in whatever combination – both for his penetrating intellectual engagement with the music and for the generosity of his playing.”

Winner of a 2013 MacArthur Genius Fellowship, the 2014 Avery Fisher Prize, and Musical America’s 2014 Instrumentalist of the Year award, he has recently appeared as soloist with the Cleveland Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, and the symphony orchestras of Boston, Chicago, San Francisco, and London.

Denk is known for his original and insightful writing on music, which Alex Ross, music critic for The New Yorker, praises for its “arresting sensitivity and wit.” Denk recounts his experiences of touring, performing, and practising on his blog, Think Denk, which was recently selected for inclusion in the Library of Congress web archives.

Having cultivated relationships with many living composers, he currently has several commissioning projects in progress. This past summer he made his BBC Proms Debut in a program devoted to Beethoven and Scriabin. Denk graduated from Oberlin College, Indiana University, and the Juilliard School. He lives in New York City. His website and blog are at

Denk’s program for the Coast Recital Society will feature an extraordinary range of music, from William Byrd, J.S. Bach, Haydn and Schumann to Music of Ragtime by Hindemith, Stravinsky, Nancarrow and Lambert.
