Brilliance in opening concert of new season

Coast Recital Society

Brilliance and youth mark the opening concert of the Coast Recital Society 2014/15 concert season with the CRS debut of Can-adian violinist Timothy Chooi, accompanied at the piano by Amanda Chan, this Sunday, Oct. 5. The concert at the Raven’s Cry Theatre in Sechelt begins at 2:30 p.m. with a pre-concert chat at 1:30.

At the age of 16, Chooi won the 2010 Grand Prix of l’Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal (OSM) Standard Life Competition, with a performance described in Montreal’s La Presse as “un miracle.” As winner of the 2013 Vadim Repin International Scholarship audition, Chooi performed in New York’s Carnegie Hall. He has performed at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, the Orford Arts Centre, Montréal Chamber Music Festival, Banff Centre of the Arts and the 30th anniversary concert for the Vancouver Recital Society. He makes his debut with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra in March 2015.

Chooi currently studies with Ida Kavafian at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. As winner of the Canada Council Musical Instrument Bank Competition 2012, Chooi performs on the 1729 Guarneri del Gesù.

Chan has achieved recognition as concert pianist, teacher and lecturer. She has given concerts in Canada and abroad as a soloist and chamber player with highlights that include concerts in U.S., China, Austria, Germany, Italy, Netherlands and Slovakia. Her particular passion for the collaborative arts has led to concert tours in Europe and Asia, as well as giving master classes in China.

The Chooi/Chan concert will include works by Saint-Saens, Prokofiev, Ysaye, Arcuri and Beethoven.

The remaining concerts of the season feature Les Violons du Roy Chamber Orchestra, Doric String Quartet, Gryphon Trio and pianists Stephen Osborne and André Laplante.
