The Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour arrives in Gibsons this Friday, Nov. 16, featuring award-winning films and audience favourites from films entered in the annual festival in Banff. This is the Tetrahedron Outdoor Club's primary fundraiser for cabin maintenance and firewood supply. The festival screens at Elphinstone Secondary School in Gibsons at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6. Dynamic workshop
Author Ben Nuttall-Smith (Blood, Feathers & Holy Men, Secrets Kept/Secrets Told) will present a workshop for writers, poets and public speakers at the Gibsons Library this Saturday, Nov. 17, from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Using his skills in theatre, poetry, editing and writing, Nuttall-Smith teaches voice and performance skills that will help authors read to the public more confidently. Fisher-girl
On Saturday meet Sylvia Taylor, author of The Fisher Queen, a book about her true life experiences on one of B.C.'s fishing boats. She will sign her books from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Woods Showcase at Sunnycrest Mall in Gibsons.
Potter's show
Potter Laurie Rolland will host her 10th annual open house this weekend from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Smaller functionally-based objects as well as major exhibition work will be on display within a broad price range. Her hand-built work is inspired by nature and is unique in form and surface. Best foreign film
Winner of the 1995 Academy Award for Best Foreign Film, Burnt by the Sun is a breathtaking saga set in Stalinist Russian circa 1936. The story focuses on a single turbulent day in the life of Soviet revolutionary hero Serguei Kotov. Filmed in Russia and France in 1994, this historical drama is directed by Nikita Mikhalkov, Russian with English subtitles.
The Sunshine Coast Film Society hosts this screening at the Heritage Playhouse in Gibsons on Monday, Nov. 19, at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 7. Tickets are $5 for members and $8 for non-members, available at the door.

Gibsons Public Art Gallery continues its gala opening celebrations with lectures and performances, for $5 suggested donation.
On Tuesday, Nov. 20, Don Grayston from Simon Fraser University will be giving a lecture entitled Soul Brothers: Leonard Cohen linked to Thomas Merton. Doors open at 6:45 p.m.., with the lecture starting at 7:15. Grayston will be available to answers questions after the lecture.
On Wednesday, Nov. 21, check out the Arts Café at 7 p.m.with poetry readings and music, and again on Sunday, Nov. 25, at 2 p.m. with dance, poetry, music and a puppet show.
Book launch
Author Jim Williams is launching his novel, Rock Reject, in Gibsons on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at the Gibsons Public Library. The winner of the 2011 Beacon Award for social justice literature, Rock Reject is set in both Toronto and in the notorious Cassiar Asbestos Mine where Williams worked in the 1970s. Rock Reject is a story of personal redemption and of the struggle against a mining company's disregard for the health of its workers and the local community.
