Art Beat

The Sechelt Arts Festival opens this week with a visual arts exhibition at the Seaside Centre that runs until Oct. 26 and Spirit of Song performance at the Raven’s Cry Theatre with Nir Blu and other Coast fine musicians on Oct. 18 at 8 p.m.

A concert next Thursday, Oct. 23, features members of the Vancouver Adapted Music Society (VAMS) who have tackled barriers faced by musicians disabled by injuries and accidents. The evening begins at 7 p.m. with a pre-concert talk about VAMS and the work they do. Tickets for festival events can be purchased online at secheltartsfestival.com or at the Sechelt Visitor Centre, Strait Music in Sechelt or Windows on the Water in Gibsons.

Midnite movie

The annual ZombieWalk with Gibsons Cinema brings its first midnite movie fundraiser to the Coast tonight, Friday, Oct. 17, and instead of a zombie movie, will kick off with the cult classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show, starting at 11:15 p.m. at the Gibsons Cinema. Tickets are available at the door.

Book signing

Author Carol Gardarsson has two book signings coming up in her series, Brewing Evil. The first is this Friday, Oct. 17 at Etcetera, the new home décor shop in Madeira Park, from noon to 3 p.m.

On Saturday, Oct. 18, she’ll be at Windows on the Water in Sunnycrest Mall in Gibsons from noon to 3 p.m. She’ll be signing copies of all books in the series, but especially copies of the fifth and final book, Brewing Evil: Witch Water. As well, the self-published author has a new book out titled Tales of the Interlake. Stop by and meet her.

Lives of Others

The Lives of Others (Das Leben der Anderen) is a German thriller with English subtitles and is the next film in the SC Film Society series. It screens on Sunday, Oct. 19 in Sechelt at 2 p.m. (doors open at 1:30) at the Sechelt Seniors Centre and again on Monday, Oct. 20 at 7:30 p.m. at Gibsons Heritage Playhouse.

Tickets are $5 members, $9 single event.

An audience favourite, this tense drama follows a Stasi officer in 1984 East Berlin, whose job is to uncover people planning to defect to the West. The story revolves around his investigation of a late-30s playwright and his girlfriend, who prove to be more challenging than the usual suspects. An Academy award-winning film for Best Foreign Language Film in 2006 that gently — but firmly — draws you into its complex web.

New show

Field Tested, a new show from Rick Cepella, has opened at Gibsons Public Art Gallery and runs to Nov. 10. Cepella is a painter, art instructor and cartoonist/illustrator living in Powell River. His paintings are expressive reactions to the wild landscape as well as the human form.

Decades of outdoor activities, 12 years of work as a biological surveyor and countless hours of field drawing and painting in the rugged backcountry of Western Canada continue to shape his work.

In the Eve Smart Gallery, artist Jacquie Manning shows My Animal Friends — amazing animals encountered on trips to countries around the world. The show is open from Thursday to Monday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
