Art fundraiser for wildlife

Local artist and sustainability professional Fiona S. Crofton-Wild, is offering a workshop, Creature Teachers, as a fundraiser for Gibsons Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre (GWRC) this Saturday, Feb. 28.

The workshop, which runs from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Arts Building, 464 South Fletcher, Gibsons, involves a 13-step method of creating a painting that allows anyone to paint an image by drawing from his or her internal imagery, symbol and story. Awards night

Two of the Sunshine Coast Arts Council’s artistic awards are being presented at the Artesia Coffeehouse tonight, Friday, Feb. 27, at the Arts Centre.

Both awards, juried by former Gillian Lowndes award winners Sandy Buck and Katherine Denham, honour Sunshine Coast residents. Artist Anna Banana will receive the Lowndes award acknowledging an artist active in any arts discipline and demonstrating long-standing achievements, innovation and recent growth in his/her field. The Klein Award recognizes an individual pursuing an artistic passion developed late in life and working in any of the visual arts, including crafts and fibre arts. This year’s recipient is visual artist Elaine Seepish.

Coffeehouse

The Artesia Coffeehouse is on tonight, Feb. 27 at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre in Sechelt. Doors open at 7 p.m., show at 8. Starting off the night of music will be brothers Cam and Chris Peters, guitar and flute, followed by a duo with Steve Schwabl and Hacksaw playing rock and roll crooning tunes. After the break, singer-songwriter John Marian will entertain, followed by a musical gong show featuring Barry Taylor, percussion, Graham Ord, sax and flutes, Anna Lumiere, accordion, Rodin Columb, guitar, and Sarah Columb, vocals — and yes, there will be gongs. Precious Littles reunion

This Saturday, Feb. 28, The Precious Littles (Joe Stanton, Simon Paradis, Gerry Millar, Tom Neville and Jay Johnson) perform a reunion concert at Coopers Green Hall in Halfmoon Bay.

The Littles will be playing their brand of roots from their 2008 CD release, Sometimes You Win. Tickets are $20, available at the Welcome Woods Market and the Halfmoon Bay General Store.

Lee reads

Nancy Lee will read from her latest book, The Age, at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 28, at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre.

Lee received kudos for her first book, Dead Girls, a collection of dark stories set against a backdrop of the disappearance of Vancouver’s sex-trade workers. The Age, set in Vancouver in 1984, is Lee’s first novel. Admission is by donation, courtesy of the Canada Council.

Dance magic

The Coast Symphony Orchestra (CSO)presents a collection of classical dance music on Sunday, March 1.

Artistic director Edette Gagné has gathered dances from five countries and six composers to create an enchanting program that is guaranteed to get you swaying in your seat. From Hungarian and Czech folk dances to Russian theatre music and Viennese waltzes, audience members will be transported on a journey as MC Alec Tebbutt weaves the music together with prose and poetry. As well, in a pre-concert chat at 2 p.m., Gagne will give attendees a little history about the works.

Shall We Dance? starts at 2:30 p.m. at the  Heritage Playhouse in Gibsons. Tickets are $15 for adults, $5 for children 12 and under, available from CSO members, at Laedeli in Gibsons and Strait Music in Sechelt. 

Poet alert

Film and AGM

The film Finding Vivian Maier (an Academy Award nominee) will show at the Gibsons Heritage Playhouse on Monday, March 2 at 7:30 p.m. (doors at 7 p.m.) in a presentation from the SC Film Society. Following the film will be the Society’s annual general meeting. See www.scfs.ca for more details.

Gigi show

Gigi Hoeller is the featured artist at the Gibsons Landing Gallery for March in a show called Stories and Messages. She will show her story blocks with powerful little messages on them and some new totem paintings. The opening reception is next Friday, March 6 from 2:30 to 6 p.m. Aaron Joe will be speaking at 3 p.m. telling the story about being an eight year old, participating in the carving of the school district totem created by Bradley Hunt that is located at the Sechelt Alternative School.

New artwork

A new display of community art is on the walls at the Sechelt Public Library and the main upstairs lobby of municipal hall. This display features 11 local artists and will be up until May 2015. The work of Jane Richardson, Bob Evermon, Jana Curll, Jim Woods, Harry Almond, Doris Biddle, Elaine Seepish and Steve Murdoch is in the Library and work by Lynda Manson, Ruth Rodgers and Marlene Lowden is at municipal hall.
