Re: "A typical media response" (Coast Reporter letters, Jan. 4).

After listing Canada's efforts to prevent an escalation in gun-related deaths, which include both criminal and psychological checks, Gordon Politeski goes on to say the issue that needs addressing, but is ignored, is "mentally unstable, socially inept individuals." Surely that is addressed by the inclusion of psychological checks; the very reason why our gun laws are effective!

In her letter in the same edition, Bonnie Nicol is correct that the Harper government is determined to weaken our gun control laws, and our local MP John Weston is mute on this subject, happy as ever to pander to his leader.
