Two traditional workshops are scheduled at the Sunshine Coast Museum and Archives, one for Coast Salish cedar weaving on Nov. 15, and one for ornamental drum making on Nov. 29. Register by calling the museum at 604-886-8232.

On Saturday, Nov. 15 at the Sunshine Coast Museum and Archives in Gibsons learn the traditional art form of Coast Salish cedar weaving under the guidance of master weaver Jessica Casey.

During the course of the day, you will learn basic cedar weaving skills while crafting a cedar box with a twined wool design. Casey’s insightful knowledge of weaving in the Coast Salish tradition infuses this workshop with great energy.

Fee is $90 per person, all materials included. The workshop runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

On Saturday, Nov. 29, join Tsawaysia Spukwus as she leads you through the process of making your own sacred drum while sharing songs and storytelling. Participants have the option of building a 14-, 6- or 3-inch ornamental drum. You will be truly amazed and empowered as you transform Mother Earth’s gifts into a resonant drum. With more than 20 years of working with First Nation communities as an educator and 15 years guiding sacred drum making workshops, Spukwus is masterful at bringing innovative learning opportunities to all people. The workshop runs 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

To register for either workshop, call the museum at 604-886-8232.
