The Sunshine Coast Volunteer Centre is celebrating the Coast's exceptional volunteers by co-ordinating the 2012 Celebration of Excellence.

This high-profile event is held every two years and is meant to become a Sunshine Coast tradition. The Coast has more than 400 non-profit organizations, each one involving many volunteers. Volunteers are creating positive change on many fronts; their work is essential to maintaining our resilient community.

Over the last four years, the Celebration of Excellence steering committee has been fine-tuning the process of honouring the Coast's outstanding volunteers. The call for nominations went out in January. Of the nominations received, an independent review team chose 18 volunteers who will be presented awards in the following categories: arts and culture, education, health and wellness, community building, sport and recreation, non-profit/public sector employees, environmental enhancement, and the citation of outstanding achievement. Their names will be released publicly next week.

These 18 volunteers will be honoured at a gala evening at the Chatelech Secondary School Theatre on Saturday night, April 14 - the start of National Volunteer Week.

Ed Hill, a 2010 recipient of a celebration award, will be the guest speaker.

Tickets for this event can be purchased at the Sechelt Visitor Centre.

The volunteer centre thanks Coast Reporter and the Sunshine Coast Credit Union for their generous sponsorship of this important community event.
