Fierce sunshine, early humidity and a lack of breeze were no deterrents to the several hundred Gambier Islanders and friends who supported the annual Family Fair on Gambier Island last Saturday Aug. 2.

This event is one of the principal fundraisers for the beautiful Community Centre, which needs to find about $10,000 each year to maintain itself. The large contingent of young children greatly enjoyed the pirate theme of the indoor games and later the outdoor races and cupcake walk.

The market had tables displaying a wide variety of goods and services, while the Centre’s kitchen sold baking and beverages; the ANAVETs sold a lunch menu and the beer and wine tent kept the adults happy in the bistro-style garden.

The silent auction, so generously supported by local Gibsons and Lower Mainland businesses, raised more than $3,000 towards the cause. Auctioneer Bruce Pollock, in lively fashion, drove up the bids of the winning entries from the pie contest, while the 50/50 draw raised the highest amount in recent memory.

The organizing committee would like to thank all those who volunteered or participated in making this a truly memorable event.
