Andrea Sierralta and Robyn Walker, staff at Sumac Place, enjoyed celebrating Sumac Days.

Clients, volunteers and community members came together earlier this month to help celebrate a two-year anniversary for Sumac Place.

The program at Sumac Place was developed to support clients with chronic and persistent mental illness in their journey to overcome challenges related to their mental health. The recovery model allows clients to build on their strengths and work towards their individual goals. Its focus is to re-establish the belief that recovery is possible and obtainable with the right approach.

Sumac Days was created not only as a fun event for clients and families to come together, but also an opportunity for Sumac Place to thank and acknowledge all the wonderful community businesses and volunteer groups who contribute to its program.

This year the Sunshine Coast Quilters’ Guild donated 28 hand-made quilts so that each client would have a welcoming, warm blanket for their bed.

Every Friday morning an instructor from Taoist Tai Chi volunteers her time to teach tai chi to clients and staff. Many businesses and non-profit organizations have created opportunities for clients to be employed and learn skills that will lead to greater independence.
