Still time to build your bridge

The second annual Sunshine Coast Popsicle Stick Bridge Building Contest is coming March 10. This is a great introduction to the engineering profession with some real hands-on experience.

The second annual Sunshine Coast Popsicle Stick Bridge Building Contest is coming March 10. This is a great introduction to the engineering profession with some real hands-on experience.

To help participants with their bridge designs, a workshop facilitated by Donald Burkholder, an engineer from world renowned Buckland and Taylor Ltd. of North Vancouver, was held on Saturday, Feb. 4. The workshop provided inspiration and instruction. Among the many important points he gave was that the glue should dry for at least one week before the testing. Longer is stronger.

There is still time to purchase your kit ($5 refundable with your entry) - at GBS in Sechelt or Gibsons, or at Rona in Pender Harbour or Powell River - and build your bridges.

All age groups are encouraged to attend and compete in elementary, secondary, family and open divisions. In addition to the usual bridge, new this year is the addition of dental floss to build cable supported bridges.

If you live within 30 minutes of Sechelt, you are asked to bring your bridges and models to pre-register at the Sechelt Seniors' Centre on March 9 from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Those living outside of this area can register between 10 and 11 a.m. on event day, March 10. Testing will start at 10 a.m. with pre-registered bridges, then bridges registered that morning, followed by awards and then three educational videos.

Displayed models will be evaluated by a panel of judges, and prizes will be awarded according to creativity, originality and artistry.
