Solar eclipse on Oct. 23

Royal Astronomical Society of Canada

There will be a partial solar eclipse visible in Western Canada on Oct. 23, covering approximately 66 per cent of the sun. Members of the astronomy centre will be setting up solar scopes on the seawall in Davis Bay on this date at 12:30 p.m. to allow the public to view the sun.

If you’re going to view this eclipse on your own, be sure to use filters to view the sun to protect your eyes. Mylar or black polymer eclipse glasses or a #14 arc welder’s filter are good for viewing without a telescope or binoculars. If using binoculars or a telescope, be sure to use special solar filters.

The solar eclipse begins in Vancouver at 1:32 p.m. and ends at 4:16 p.m. The sun’s altitude at maximum eclipse will be 24 degrees.
