Roberts Creek Library celebrates 68 years

Anniversary Party
library
Roberts Creek Library will be holding an anniversary party on Sunday, June 25, starting at 1 p.m.

This year, the sesquicentennial for Canada, is also the 50th anniversary for the Roberts Creek Library building and marks 68 years of local library service – a good time to celebrate. There will be an anniversary party at 1 p.m. with tea, coffee, cake, some fun fundraising and a book sale, on Sunday, June 25, during Slow Sunday in the Creek, behind the library. Everyone is invited.

In 1949 Mrs. Rookes started Roberts Creek Library in a small cottage at the corner of Roberts Creek and Lower Road. Eighteen years later a new building housed the Post Office and the growing library. When Canada Post moved out, the library again expanded. It has been operated by dedicated volunteers ever since and currently serves about 2,000 Sunshine Coast borrowers.

Roberts Creek Library is independent of the pubic library system in Gibsons and Sechelt.  It is supported in part by the Sunshine Coast Regional District, community donations of books and cash, and the fundraising efforts of volunteers.

Roberts Creek Library buys the best and latest publications in adult fiction and non-fiction chosen by the book-buying committee and suggestions from borrowers. The collection includes large print and audio books. The little library is proud of its large collection of books for young readers, for all ability levels, including books in French, and popular graphic novels.

Roberts Creek Library is a valued community resource and welcomes local author readings, poetry club meetings, Santa’s annual visit and other events. On Slow Sundays in the Creek, Roberts Creek Library is open from noon to 2 p.m. Other times to visit: Tuesday and Thursday from 2 to 8 p.m., Wednesday from 2 to 6 p.m., and Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
