On Sunday, April 24 – for the 27th year in a row – Roberts Creek is holding its Earth Day Festival. Everyone is invited to come and celebrate at the Roberts Creek Pier Park. It will be a great day of music, tasty local food and information focusing on environmental initiatives.

Organizers are asking the public to challenge themselves to two tasks. The first is to get there without the use of a single occupancy vehicle. Enjoy transportation on the SCRD’s musical shuttle bus from Davis Bay or the Sunnycrest Mall in Gibsons. Alternatively, ride your bike down and get a free tune-up from the bike mechanics of Transportation Choices (TraC). Other options include walking, carpooling or using the services of the Coast Car Co-op and Share-There.

The second challenge is to embrace zero waste. Bring your travel cup, containers, bags and utensils.

Starting the day at 10 a.m. is an open ceremony at the Roberts Creek Hall. It will be “a gathering in meditation, sound and prayer to awaken our interconnectedness and wonder of life,” led by Rev. Ray Niebergall. From noon until 5 p.m. will be the main festival at the pier, emceed by the talented Jena Eros with live music from Arbutus Sound Chorus, Ulla Shine, Dark Mountain Tribe, Bad to the Bow, Vibris’sea and The Daggers.

A special tribute to Daniel Kingsbury will take place at 1:50 p.m., honouring his community work, music and environmental legacy. One of Daniel’s songs will be performed by members of the bands Mindil Beach and Wilderness Crew.

This year will feature local food of Farm to Feast, The Good Life, Curry in the Creek, The Amuse Supper Club and the Green Green Kitchen. The event will host over 55 booths in total and offers a complete day of interesting adventures.

Organizer Graham Starsage notes that on April 22, Earth Day, the Paris Agreement is expected to be endorsed by more than 150 countries.

“This will represent the United Nations’ single largest one-day signing of an international agreement,” Starsage said. “It signifies world governments moving in a united fashion addressing climate change. Earth Day was chosen to sign the Paris Agreement because it is the world’s largest environmental event. It was first held in 1970 and today it is celebrated by over one billion people in 193 different countries.”
