The 2014/15 executive of the Gibsons Lions Club was recently inducted.
Brenda Morane presented Lion of the Year awards to Elizabeth Nordlund and Martine Lauzier.
New president Bob Nordlund thanked the 2013/14 executive under the auspices of Morane for their commitment and can-do approach to service this past year, which allowed for success at every turn.
Nordlund said he is looking forward to working with a new team that is enthusiastic about serving the community.
The July 1 celebration, Sea Cavalcade, drag races and the Outrigger race dinner — all fundraising events — kept Lions’ members busy this summer.
The Gibsons Lions Club is part of Lions International comprised of more than 1.35 million members in 207 countries and 46,000 clubs.
Gibsons Lions take their motto “We Serve” seriously. Since 1972, members have worked on innumerable service projects. Currently Gibsons Lions operate and manage the Kiwanis Housing Society, providing social housing for approximately 60 residents.
As well, members this week prepared breakfast for the Cops for Cancer ride.
One hundred per cent of the funds raised comes back to the Gibsons community. Last year, more than $32,000 was raised through catering, selling food from the concession trailer at community events, the Christmas raffle, sale of Christmas trees and a B.C. gaming grant.
In turn, this money becomes financial support for the Sunshine Elves Club, Sea Cavalcade, Scouts Canada and Girl Guides of Canada, Sunshine Coast White Cane Club, Sunshine Coast Special Olympics, Navy, Army and Air Cadets, baseball associations, Elphinstone Secondary School student bursary, and individuals with challenges who need special equipment.
The Gibsons Lions Club is holding an open house this Wednesday, Sept. 24, at 7 p.m. at the Dougall Park Hall on Alder Springs Road in Gibsons.
