Métis Cultural Awareness Week proclaimed

Métis

The president of the Vancouver Métis Citizens Society (VMCS), Ron Paradis, announced Nov. 5 that a proclamation has been issued by the Town of Gibsons proclaiming Nov. 10 to 16 as Métis Cultural Awareness Week in Gibsons.

Coun. Charlene San Jenko presented the proclamation to Métis historians George and Terry Goulet of Sechelt at the Nov. 4 council meeting.

The Goulets gave a talk on Louis Riel and Métis history to the council meeting and on behalf of VMCS presented the Town with a copy of their book, The Métis in British Columbia: from Fur Trade Outposts to Colony.

In recognition of the contributions of Louis Riel to the Métis people, the VMCS will be holding a gathering on Sunday, Nov. 16, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Mission Point House in Davis Bay.

The VMCS recently moved its head office to 989 Reed Road in Gibsons. Articles on Métis history, heritage, culture and events and information on the activities of the Vancouver Métis Citizens Society are available at: www.vmcs.ca
