Local teen places fifth at Miss Teen Canada

Former Chatelech Secondary School student Sian Slingerland came in fifth place in the Miss Teen Canada beauty pageant recently, ahead of 60 other contestants vying for the title.

The pageant on July 20 held some stiff competition for the former Coaster turned Albertan, who now lives in Edmonton.

Slingerland won the Miss Teen Central Alberta title earlier this year, which allowed her to compete in the Miss Teen Canada pageant.

"It was an amazing experience. Everyone was really, really nice. We got to learn new choreography, and we went and we saw a bunch of different places," Slingerland said.

Contestants had to model a bathing suit and evening gown and undergo an interview with the judges, as well as demonstrate their social media presence, which counted for part of their mark.

Slingerland said she had almost 300 likes on her Facebook page and noted many of her supporters were from the Sunshine Coast.

She was also able to raise a little over $1,000 for Free The Children. Fundraising for the selected charity was a prerequisite of all who entered the pageant.

"My auntie Cindy was selling bracelets down at Rockwater, my Mom was selling some of her jewelry, I did a huge bottle drive there which got around $100 and then a bottle drive in Edmonton that got around $100 and then donations from family and friends, it was awesome. The support was overwhelming," Slingerland said.

Slingerland was happy with her fifth place finish, noting the winner, Jill Martin from Saskatchewan, was "a gorgeous girl, very intelligent. I have no problems with her winning."

Slingerland said judges peaked her curiosity about entering international pageants while at the competition and added her dream is now to one day compete in Miss Universe Canada.
