Local member to attend UN Commission

CFUW-Sunshine Coast

Canadian Federation of University Women’s (CFUW) Sunshine Coast member Kathryn Caswell will be part of the 20-person Canada-wide CFUW delegation to the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (UN-CSW) in New York City, March 9 to 20.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to discuss matters of concern with women from around the world and to bring back information and new perspectives to our CFUW-SC club and to our community,” said CFUW-SC president Barbara Cochran.

The CSW is the principal global intergovernmental body exclusively dedicated to the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women. The main focus of this year’s UN-CSW session is the review of the Beijing declaration and platform for action (Beijing 20+) and the progress of their implementation 20 years after being adopted at the Fourth World Conference on Women at Beijing, China in 1995.

The CFUW delegation will actively participate in discussions at the UN-CSW session as a non-governmental organization with consultative status to the United Nations. The CFUW delegation will also participate in discussions on how to influence world decision makers to implement principles of Beijing 20+ and how to encourage Canadian political leaders to have a debate on women’s issues during Canada’s upcoming 2015 federal election campaign.
