Courses are starting in October where boaters can obtain their Pleasure Craft Operator Certificate (PCOC), learn the essentials of navigation, seamanship and weather forecasts, and qualify for a Maritime Radio Operator Certificate.
Boating basics: All operators of motorized pleasure craft are required to show proof of operator competency. All you need to know for the Transport Canada test is presented in an easy to read format. The study guide meets all the standards established by Transport Canada’s Office of Boating Safety, and as an extra benefit, after you pass the Canadian Power and Sail Squadron test, your card is also recognized in the U.S.
Boating essentials: This course will take you to a higher level of boating competence. Technology is changing the way we navigate, but in order to use modern electronic devices, you need to understand the principles of charts and coastal navigation. Topics that include compass, plotting, conning, anchoring, lines, ropes, global positioning system (GPS) and digital charts will increase your boating knowledge and improve the enjoyment and safety of your boating adventures.
Weather fundamentals: Wind, waves, fog or lightning — the wise boater knows how to anticipate conditions that impact enjoyment and safety. This course provides the tools to find and interpret reports and forecasts, and to develop judgement in reading the sky and sea.
Maritime radio: This includes the emergency use of marine VHF radio and everyday operating techniques. All recreational boaters will want to take advantage of the capabilities of this form of communication, which provides a safety lifeline. Included is the Restricted Operator Certificate exam; to operate a maritime radio, this certificate is required by law.
