Harvest Fest fun at the Garden

SC Botanical Garden
Harvest Festival
The Sunshine Coast Botanical Garden is hosting the annual Harvest Fest this Sunday, Aug. 31.

The Sunshine Coast Botanical Garden is the place to be this Sunday, Aug. 31, for the annual Harvest Fest.

This last blast of summer features live music by The Brothers, vegetable harvesting, garlic, honey and bushels of fun from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

In the veggie patch you’ll see a huge array of organic produce destined for the food bank, and chat with the volunteers about how and what they have produced. Kids will be thrilled to harvest and taste straight from a living plant. Gardeneers (from our preschool program) can revisit the tiny seeds and seedlings they planted in July; there will be some dramatic results.

You’ll meet our elder gardeners in the seniors accessible garden, who have been harvesting their fruit and vegetables all summer from specially designed raised beds.

Master Gardeners will be on hand too, so bring your gardening questions or challenges. In the bee demonstration area, taste and take home honey freshly bottled by the SC Beekeepers, and meet the bees who make it.

In the picnic and play area, try your hand at giant croquet, tomato hoop basketball or the sack race, or get a snack from the Rotary’s barbecue while you enjoy the music. There are crafts and games for kids and room to romp.

The woodcrafters will display their creations from trees, the Spinners and Weavers Guild will be on hand to demonstrate techniques old and new, and the Astronomy Club will be out with their solar telescopes. All this plus a plant sale and bags of organically grown garlic bulbs, perfect for eating or planting for your own crop next year.

Membership in the Garden Society is an affordable way to keep up with the many events and discounts. It’s a great place for families and friends to enjoy experiences, laughter and natural wonder.

Admission is by donation (suggested $5/adult; $2/child) — please pay what you can to support the Botanical Garden. This event is friendly for dogs who keep their humans leashed, clean and out of trouble. Carpooling is recommended.
