The Goldenhawk Streamliner will be on display at the Sechelt Legion following the Remembrance Day ceremony on Nov. 11.

The  Goldenhawk Streamliner, a 10-metre long diesel race car being tweaked to break the land speed record, will be on display at the Sechelt Legion following the Remembrance Day ceremony on Nov. 11 for the public to view.

Donations for Goldenhawk memorabilia and photos with the crew will be accepted and donated to the Legion’s Poppy Fund.

“The car itself has been designed to honour the Air Force, so it ties in well with Remembrance Day,” said Sechelt Legion president Irma Mahar.

Long time race car driver and developer of the Goldenhawk, Randy Pierce, said he hopes that having the race car on display will encourage more people to come to the Legion following the Remembrance Day ceremony to “spend some time talking with and honouring the veterans.”

Pierce served with the Air Force as a young man and later spent many years on the drag racing circuit. He set out to build the Goldenhawk Streamliner in 2009, in honour of the 100-year anniversary of the Air Force.

“We developed the Golden-hawk project to demonstrate Canadians’ abilities to cooperate, to innovate and to recycle. The whole car is built out of recycled junk,” Pierce said.

He brought together more than 100 different experts and enthusiasts from around B.C. to build the Goldenhawk and now his team is working to increase its speed in the hopes of breaking the land speed record of 320 MPH for a diesel-powered race car.

This year’s test run for the Goldenhawk on the Bonneville Salt Flats was rained out, but the previous year’s run clocked the Goldenhawk at 130 MPH and some adjustments were made.

Pierce is sure it’s faster now.

Come to the Sechelt Legion following the Remembrance Day ceremony at the cenotaph to see the vehicle and learn more from the crew, four of whom live on the Sunshine Coast.

Pierce himself recently moved to the Coast and became a member of the Sechelt Legion.
