Focus on breast cancer prevention

CANCER CLINIC

With statistics being one in eight for women developing breast cancer in their lifetime, it seems that an ounce of prevention may be worth a pound of cure.

“Thermography is a vital health assessment for early detection and the best chance for preventative action against breast cancer,” said Glenda Neufeld, the owner and technician of Thermography Clinic Vancouver Island, who is bringing her high tech equipment to Gibsons next week.

Medical Infrared Thermography uses an infrared camera that is similar to military “heat seeking” technology. Breast thermography is based on the scientific premise that before the growth of abnormal cells can occur, an increased blood supply must be circulated to the growth area. This microcirculation of blood causes heat. The infrared camera is able to measure the heat patterns, which are then analyzed by board certified clinical thermographers. Thermography is non-invasive and radiation-free. It’s safe for all women and is especially useful for those who have implants, have dense breasts, or are younger than the age recommended for mammography screening.

There are many prevention focused medical practitioners, such as naturopathic physicians, who can help implement a personalized plan to improve breast health once there is an established baseline.

“Women have come back for a follow-up thermography exam after doing some homework and have seen positive changes, which is very empowering,” Neufeld said. “It helps move them from awareness to action.”

The breast thermography clinic will be held at Gibsons Chiropractic Health and Wellness Centre on Nov. 5. Call 604-886-7080 to make an appointment or visit www.thermographyvancouverisland.com for more information.
