Film examines energy sustainability

Green Film Series

Have you been thinking of setting up an alternative energy system? Playing with the idea of solar panels on your roof? The way to energy sustainability is examined by David Chernushenko in the next fall Green Film Series movie, Powerful: Energy for Everyone.

The film will be shown at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 17 at the Gibsons Heritage Playhouse and Thursday, Nov. 20 in Sechelt at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre. The Wood Duck Bus is scheduled to bring Pender Harbour residents to the screening in Sechelt.

Canadian filmmaker Chernushenko travels from his home in Ottawa to meet amazing innovators, eccentric eco-activists and otherwise average communities completely powered by renewable energy. Tackling the spin of the big energy lobby and, equally, dispelling the myths of a “green utopia” envisioned by many, Powerful is a candid examination of what a sustainable future may actually look like. We begin to discover that the potential for political, economic and democratic change is right here, on our very doorsteps — or in the sky just above them.

Chernushenko will join the Gibsons screening via Skype.  A Q&A session will follow each screening, with community members currently using alternative energy systems, including Dennis Olson of Olson Electric, taking part in the panel discussion.

The Gibsons Green Team and Sunshine Coast in Transition are working together to develop a local solar cooperative, and will be on hand to answer questions. Community members who are interested in learning more are encouraged to attend one of these screenings.

Doors open at 7 p.m. with the film starting at 7:30 p.m. Admission is by donation.
