For the past 14 years the Coast Lions Christmas Tree farm has been selling Christmas trees from its location at the top of Leek Road near Gibsons, but that service is now coming to an end.

“We are sad to say that the members of the Lions Clubs involved, Egmont, Sunshine Coast and Gibsons, will no longer be providing this service,” said Lion Clifford Moss. “We deeply regret this as we will miss our many valued repeat customers as well as the friendship and fellowship involved.”

The Lions tree farm became much more than just a fundraiser.

Starting in 1999 and over the ensuing years the Lions Club has seen loyal customers return year after year. Teenagers who came out with their parents grew up and in turn brought their own children.

“We watched as you, the people of the Sunshine Coast, came out, supported us and indeed encouraged us in our efforts. We watched those who came become regular supporters, families grow, parents turn into grandparents, and old friends return again and again,” Moss said.

“In many instances it was virtually a family tradition. Whether we had wonderful weather or the rains and wind pelted one and all, it was a fun and special time of the year that will be missed by all of us and no doubt by many of you.”

A combination of maturing Lions members, fewer members able to do the maintenance, and new plans for the property by the owners have made this a good time to close the farm down.

The three clubs would like to thank the landowners, Cosulich Group Investments Inc., for providing access to the tree farm, Tao Karkabe of Bonniebrook Industries for the annual generous donation of the Porta Potties and a very special thank you to Todd Loitz of Walt’s Towing for taking the concession trailer to the tree farm since day one at no cost. All have helped make this project come together.

“Most of all we would like to thank you, the people of the Sunshine Coast. These past years have been very special,” Moss added. “You are our friends and supporters. We will miss this special event that meant so much to us. May you all have a very special Merry Christmas with loved ones and friends.”
