Sunshine Coast resident and dentist Dr. Bert Smulders was honoured with an Award of Merit at the College of Dental Surgeons of BC’s (CDSBC) annual awards ceremony on March 8 in Vancouver.

The award recognizes Smulders’ significant contributions to the College. He first joined CDSBC’s volunteer network in 1995 as a member of the peer review committee for the Fraser Valley. He also participated on the nominations committee for two years and has been a member of the discipline committee since 2015.

Smulders practised dentistry for over 40 years after receiving his dental degree from UBC in 1976. He also taught part-time at UBC from 1977-81 and volunteered extensively at the Eastside Dental Clinic.

Enjoying his retirement on the Sunshine Coast, he spends most of his time painting with acrylics and is currently training for the Gibsons Grind Gran Fondo cycling event.

CDSBC’s mandate is to serve and protect the public by ensuring the competence and good conduct of its 10,000 registrants. For more information on the CDSBC Awards Program, see www.cdsbc.org/awards.
