Cornucopia: From dream to reality

Gibsons Public Market

The stage is being set for Oct. 25 Cornucopia, a novel gala to benefit the Gibsons Public Market, complete with delicious cuisine, vibrant music, a variety of spirits and a live auction.

“Stage” is no misnomer: Cornucopia committee chair Unni Claridge challenged her assembled volunteers to “create something fantastic” — and they have. Plans for this exciting event include an utter transformation from Friday Market into a site fit for a gala evening to remember. Volunteers Charmaine and George Bayntun are employing tents to add a magical dimension to the venue, while Emerge Design principal Gwyntie Van Tuyl Weswick is creating an interior ambience that will transform the Public Market.

Cornucopia is synonymous with “plenty” and abundance is the key ingredient in this benefit for the Market. Hundreds of volunteer hours, thousands of dollars of donations and that indefinable quality, community spirit, all contribute to an evening that will showcase local gourmet cuisine and feature a live auction with trips to San Miquel Allende and Costa Rica, art by Greta Guzek and Nancy Hache, a golf package, jewelry and more. Contributing to the magic will be renowned gypsy-jazz trio Van Django, headed up by Roberts Creek guitarist Budge Schachte, regarded as one of Canada’s most talented musicians. Spell-binding harpist Tegan Permoller, founding member of Gryffyn Ensemble, will also perform.

One of the goals of the Gibsons Public Market Society is to build a stronger and sustainable community. To realize this goal, Cornucopia hopes to see the Sunshine Coast support this benefit. “It is only through the contributions of people like you that the Market will become a reality for the Sunshine Coast. It takes the community to make it real,” said Market president Nick Sonntag.

Tickets are $125, with an $80 charitable receipt, and are available at the Market and Zocalo. For more information, call 604-886-8814.
