Reviewed as having "a voice ethereal, strong and pure, destined to soar," 19-year-old Sunshine Coast musician Katherine Rowlands has been passionate about music since early childhood.

On Saturday, July 17, at 7:30 p.m. at the Pender Harbour School of Music, this talented singer will present Through a Mirror Blue, an evening of classical, jazz, folk and contemporary music.

This concert is Rowlands third on the Sunshine Coast; her previous two, Sound of the Waves and Amongst the Lilies Fair were sellout events.

Her concert is presented in support of the St. Mary's Hospital Foundation Society and St. Mary's Hospital/Healthcare Auxiliary's fundraising goal of $2 million to assist with the purchase of new clinical and non-clinical equipment and furniture for the new hospital expansion.

"Katherine Rowlands is a poet amongst singers," reflects Jude Neale, guest singer at Sand and Water, Rowlands first public concert at the age of 14. "She is adept at phrasing and fits her impressive vocal talent into old jazz standards or beautifully intricate opera arias. Her passion for music, in its broadest spectrum, is apparent in her choice of repertoire and her ability to move from one genre to another. Katherine is fluid and lyrical, and we are fortunate to hear her at the genesis of her career."

At the July 17 concert, Rowlands will also be releasing her first CD album Eclectic, a compilation of 13 songs demonstrating her many musical styles including her own compositions.

Accompanying Row-lands will be the Sunshine Coast's Serena Eades on violin and Bowen Island's Teun Shut on the guitar. Katherine will also perform four of her own original folk compositions.

"I believe very strongly in supporting St. Mary's Hospital, as it is an integral part of our Sunshine Coast community," Rowlands said. "It has been amazing to see that although the economy has been slower than we would have hoped, the generosity of the local community has never wavered. Whenever they are called upon to offer their help for a worthy cause, this community always comes through."

With Through a Mirror Blue, she hopes to raise $3,000 (slightly more than her last concert, which helped the Pender Harbour Health Centre eliminate its mortgage) with a combination of ticket sales and community and local business sponsorships.

Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors and $10 for students and children, available at Copper Sky and Harbour Insurance, outlets in Sechelt and the night of the concert at the door.
