Sunshine Coast Grandmothers and GrandOthers (SCG&G), friends of the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign of the Stephen Lewis Foun-dation, work hard fundraising to support the work of African grandmothers.

Since their first event in November of 2006, the local group has raised more than $100,000.

Their next fundraising event is an art show.

Celebrating African Grandmothers, Heroes of the Continent, is a juried art exhibition. Launched in New Westminster, the works have been on display in 13 centres in Western Canada and will be at the Gibsons Public Art Gallery from Jan. 9 to 27 with a reception on Jan. 11 from 1 to 4 p.m. It will return to New Westminster on the eve of International Women's Day, March 7, 2014, for a gala auction.

Available at the show will be official Grandmothers' tote bags and Celebrating African Grandmothers companion books and cards.

African grandmothers are leaders in their communities and the primary caregivers for their orphaned grandchildren. They work valiantly to fight the stigma of HIV/AIDS, raise awareness about the virus and provide vital care to people living with it. In spite of the heartache and hardships, there are signs everywhere that the tide of AIDS is beginning to turn at the community level.

The art show provides a window to the world of sub-Saharan African grandmothers and celebrates their tireless work for a safer and brighter future for the next generation. The 40 pieces selected by the jury tell the story of the hope and small triumphs, which light the way to victory over the AIDS pandemic.

African grandmothers are heroic women who meet adversity head-on as they raise their voices in song, move their bodies in rhythm and heal themselves and their communities.
